Donald Trump’s increasingly erratic trade war has triggered a slump in shipments to the US’s most important ports, amid the growing risk of a recession in the world’s largest economy.
In the latest sign of the US president’s tariff policies rattling the economy, figures show the number of vessels scheduled to arrive at the Port of Los Angeles next week is down by almost a third on the same period a year earlier.
…
Analysts said the latest shipping figures, which are updated on a daily basis, indicated the fallout was escalating.

Highlighting that it typically takes between 20 and 40 days for a sea container to travel from China to the US, Sløk said there would be a knock-on impact on demand for US trucking from the middle of next month, which could lead to empty shelves and layoffs in the distribution and retail industries.
This could lead to a recession by the summer, he added.

Guardian: Ice seeking out unaccompanied immigrant children to deport or prosecute
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) officials are seeking out unaccompanied immigrant children in operations nationwide with a view to deporting them or pursuing criminal cases against them or adult sponsors sheltering them legally in the US, according to sources and an Ice document.
…
In recent months, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Ice have begun engaging in “welfare checks” on children who arrived in the US alone, usually via the US-Mexico border, to “ensure that they are safe and not being exploited”, according to a DHS spokesperson.
Although DHS is characterizing the welfare visits as benevolent, an internal Ice document accessed by the National Immigration Project advocacy group and then shared shows Ice is also seeking out children who came into the US alone as immigrants – and their US-based sponsors – for immigration enforcement purposes and/or to pursue criminal prosecutions. The recent operations and document confirm a February report from Reuters, that the Trump administration has directed Ice to track down and deport this group.
How does one “[pursue] criminal cases against them or adult sponsors sheltering them LEGALLY in the US”? These creeps will do anything to get their numbers up.
Daily Beast: Leavitt [Bimbo #1] Opens Way to Massive Move Against Immigrants’ Rights
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt [Bimbo #1] refused to shut down speculation that Donald Trump could suspend due process for migrants.
Leavitt [Bimbo #1] was asked about pausing the writ of habeas corpus at a hastily announced press briefing on Monday morning focused on immigration.
…
Habeas corpus, which is preserved in Article I of the Constitution, is the legal process that allows the courts to review whether a person is being wrongly detained or imprisoned.
“The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it,” it reads.
…
The Trump administration has been accused of denying migrants due process in an effort to quickly remove them from the U.S. and has faced off with multiple judges over its mass deportation effort.
Leavitt [Bimbo #1] insisted that the administration will continue to deport undocumented immigrants.
“The president is open to all remedies to do that,” she said.
The Dispatch: Trump’s Team of Losers
The president has hired lots of people who couldn’t win their own elections.
He’s not alone. Hegseth is only one member of the second Trump administration to have been plucked from the pantheon of electoral duds and given a second lease on political life. From the Cabinet all the way to high-profile White House aides, there are failed candidates for major office who might have otherwise toiled for years in obscurity or, even worse, local politics if not for Trump’s magnanimity. Contrary to the president’s boasted affection for winners, it’s loyalty to Trump, sometimes even in the face of defeat, that remains the most valuable characteristic for a Republican looking to get ahead these days. Even the losers.
…
So the pathway for aspiring MAGA politicians is clear: in order to get the Trump administration imprimatur to win a future race for office, try losing one first.
Raw Story: ‘He’s totally blown it’: Trump warned his polling numbers are about to get much worse
Appearing on MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” GOP strategist Brendan Buck took issue with co-host Michael Steele who told the panel to slow down their enthusiasm over the president’s growing unpopularity.
“Obviously it’s just a snapshot, but I certainly don’t think it’s going to get better for him anytime soon,” Buck countered.
…
“Just keep things humming, especially in contrast to what we had been through under Joe Biden,” he added. “Just stay out of the way, you would have been fine, and he’s totally blown it.”
‘To your point, tariffs are just getting started. this is only going to get worse,” he predicted. “You know, if anything is going to sort of check him, the guardrails are public opinion. So maybe he’ll see some of this and realize that it shouldn’t, he shouldn’t go forward. But he’s not shown himself to be somebody who, you know, recalibrates.”
Irish Star: Donald Trump to bring national holiday ‘back from ashes’ but people spot problem
President Donald Trump says he will bring a national holiday “back from the ashes” – though people are spotting a problem with the POTUS’ plan.
In a post to Truth Social, the social media app established by Trump following his ban from X, the sitting president confirmed he would reinstate Columbus Day “under the same rules” as it had been originally presented.
Dead White Man’s Day returns! I’m underwhelmed.
Musk Watch: Musk-owned company says it qualifies for federal contracts reserved for small businesses
Trump’s crony & billionaire F’Elon Musk isn’t above looting the treasury by pretending to be a “small” business:
Musk founded Boring in 2017 as a subsidiary of SpaceX. Its raison d’être was rectifying Southern California gridlock via a subterranean transportation network, though it has failed in that regard. In 2018, Musk spun off Boring, making it a privately held company that has largely served to promote his car manufacturer, Tesla. Through the gravity of its founder, carefully staged photo ops, and alleged environmental and labor violations, Boring has maintained media interest throughout its eight years of existence. But it remains the least distinguished of Musk’s companies. It has struggled to generate revenue despite receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in fundraising.
The company, which is based near Austin, Texas, has built just a few miles of commercial tunnels, all of which are located in Las Vegas, Nevada. Its failure to generate substantive business could explain why it would seek federal funding from a White House that has proven to be partial to Musk’s business interests. A senior Trump adviser, Musk also leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the White House’s austerity and parapolitical initiative. Steve Davis, the president of the Boring Company, is reportedly in charge of DOGE’s day-to-day operations.

Financial Times: Vance’s trolling audition to be Trump’s heir
The many contradictions of the vice-president should not distract from his ambition
It was inevitable that memes about JD Vance would surface the moment Pope Francis passed away. “It’s good to see you in better health,” the US vice-president told the pope on Sunday. The pontiff died on Monday.
As Donald Trump’s chief attack dog — though not yet his heir apparent — Vance is a prime target of ridicule on liberal social media. But he is also a master troller himself. Vance knows that the surest path to Maga hearts and Trump’s approval is to enrage liberals. The question is whether he means anything by it.
And this:
The answer is unclear. Vance has gone from being a never-Trumper who saw Trump as “America’s Hitler” to an arch-Trumper who sees his boss as part of God’s plan. That is as dramatic a political conversion as can happen. Rather than search for an intellectual key, Vance’s shift can be put down to ambition. The better question is whether there are any limits to his ambition. Judging by his performance so far, the answer is not really.
What this last paragraph indicates is that we can’t trust J.D. Dunce to be the person that he pretends to be. He’s an opportunist, a weasel, pure and simple!
Guardian: Fears grow that Signal leaks make Pete Hegseth top espionage target
Experts say Pentagon chief has endangered secrets of US defense department and given assistance to foreign spies
As more develops about the US defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, and his repeated disclosures of sensitive military intelligence in unsecured Signal group chats, there are growing concerns his behavior has weakened the Pentagon in the eyes of its foreign adversaries and made him and his entourage a top espionage target.
Allies, already concerned by Donald Trump’s aggressive tariffs, have also begun to see the US as an intelligence-sharing liability. There are fears that the mounting firings and leak inquiries in Hegseth’s orbit, along with his inability to manage these internal crises, exposes the entire global US war footing – especially, if a geopolitical and external crisis comes across his desk.

Fear and Loathing: Mohsen Mahdawi, almost a citizen. Almost.

Mohsen Mahdawi was arrested outside his naturalization interview in Vermont. He was on track to become a U.S. citizen. ICE decided otherwise.
