MSNBC: Stephen Miller is becoming a victim of his mass deportation policy’s success

The chief architect of Trump’s mass deportation policy faces internal pushback as the effects of increased ICE raids become clear.

In a meeting last month, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller tore into senior leaders at Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, demanding a massive surge in arrests of undocumented immigrants. As ICE tried to comply with Miller’s orders, immigration activists and other concerned Americans launched a series of protests in defiance of the mass deportation agenda. But it was a different set of protests that got the attention of Miller’s boss, President Donald Trump.

Last Thursday, the administration abruptly paused raids and arrests at hotels, farms and restaurants, a stunning shift in priorities that was clearly contrary to Miller’s orders. But the change was short-lived. The Department of Homeland Security reversed that guidance Monday, according to The Washington Post, allowing the immigration raids on those industries to resume and letting Miller retake control of the policy that has been the focus of his years in both Trump administrations.

Since Inauguration Day, Miller has had carte blanche on immigration policy in his dual role as deputy chief of staff and homeland security adviser. His insistence that ICE make 3,000 arrests per day kick-started a scramble from field offices to meet his demand. But as Vox’s Eric Levitz recently noted, Miller’s own strategy of deterrence at the border has led to a decline in the kind of encounters that would make it easy for ICE agents to rack up those numbers:

Over the past two months, America witnessed the largest decline in its foreign-born workforce since the pandemic in 2020. This contraction was driven partly by a collapse in unauthorized border crossings. Between January 2022 and June 2024, US Customs and Border Protection encountered an average of 200,000 people per month at America’s Southwest border. According to an analysis of government data from Deutsche Bank, that figure has fallen to just 12,000 people per month since Trump’s inauguration.

That has meant ICE has had to expand its list of targets to meet its quotas, including rounding up day laborers in Home Depot parking lots and field workers toiling on farms. The resulting climate of fear has scared more than just undocumented immigrants in these workforces. A Texas farmer recently told NBC affiliate KVEO of Brownsville, Texas, that within the last three weeks, there have been “zero people wanting to come out and be exposed to be able to be picked up whether they are legal or illegal.”

Tampa Free Press: Hegseth Under Fire: “More Balls” Than You, Michigan Senator Charges In Fiery Hearing

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced an intense grilling on Capitol Hill today, as a routine hearing on the 2026 Pentagon budget request erupted into a dramatic confrontation over the deployment of 4,700 troops to Los Angeles.

Senator Elissa Blair Slotkin (D-MI) accused Hegseth of betraying democratic principles and declaring his predecessor had “more balls” for refusing a similar order.

The fireworks began when Senator Slotkin tore into Hegseth, revisiting concerns she’d voiced during his confirmation hearing. Her primary fear, she reminded him, was the “potential use of the military in ways that contradict the Constitution or that taint…an apolitical military.”

Slotkin then dropped a bombshell, contrasting Hegseth’s actions with those of former Defense Secretary Mark Esper. She recounted how Esper reportedly defied President Trump’s order to deploy active-duty troops against unarmed protesters – an order she said Hegseth had previously dismissed as “theoretical.”

“Here we are, a few months later, you’ve deployed 4,700 troops to Los Angeles and against the wishes of the governor,” Slotkin blasted, her voice rising. She emphasized the historical significance, noting it was “the first time since 1965 deployed guard troops without the permission of the governor.” Past deployments, she stressed, were to protect protestors, not confront them.

Hegseth’s curt reply, “Senator, I’d be careful what you read in books,” ended the dramatic exchange, leaving a cloud of concern hanging over the Pentagon’s role in domestic affairs.

Hegseth is a weasel who never has a straight answer for anyone.

Mediaite: ‘Disgusting’: Republican Senator Rips Federal Agents Who ‘Wrestled’ U.S. Senator to the Floor, Urges Civility From Politicians

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) gave an impassioned speech on the Senate floor on Wednesday, denouncing federal agents detaining and wrestling Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) to the floor as “disgusting” – while also urging leaders to act with restraint and civility instead of trying to “trend on social media by getting in somebody’s face.”

Problem is, our Grifter-in-Chief and his band of sycophants thrive on insulting and diminishing others. Unless Trump is impeached or kicks the bucket, these behaviors will be par for the course until 2029.

Knewz: SEIU President Faces Felony Charge After ICE Protest

Knewz.com is reporting that Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President David Huerta has been charged with a felony for allegedly interfering with federal agents during an immigration enforcement operation in Los Angeles. Huerta has been accused of obstructing access to a location under investigation for employing undocumented workers. He was later released on a $50,000 bond. The incident comes at a time of heightened tensions surrounding anti-ICE protests.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed charges against Huerta for obstructing federal agents, calling it unacceptable. State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez condemned the arrest, citing concerns for workers.

Poeple: Trump Claims People Taken into ICE Custody Are Dangerous. But Only 10% Have Violent Crime Convictions: Report

A new CNN report based on government data found that more than 75 percent of those detained had no record beyond traffic or immigration offenses

  • A new CNN report shows less than 10% of people taken into custody by ICE have serious criminal offenses
  • Most people detained by ICE merely have traffic or immigration-related offenses
  • The new report on ICE data comes as Donald Trump and his administration casts immigrants as “barbaric” and “violent criminals” without evidence to back their claims

The “deporting only criminals” lie has been refuted over and over, yet King Donald’s regime continue to repeat it ad nauseum.

Mediaite: Top NYC Democrat Goes Off After Being Released Following ICE Arrest: Not Going to Allow Trump to ‘Wreck the Rule of Law’

New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was defiant in his message to President Donald Trump on Tuesday following his arrest by ICE agents.

Hours earlier, Lander attended immigration court hearings to support the migrants attending their scheduled hearings. The comptroller intended to walk out of court with them to ensure they weren’t detained. He claimed he had done so multiple times in the past without incident.

This time, however, the scene quickly turned chaotic. As Lander locked arms with a man and tried leaving with him, ICE agents surrounded them and separated the two. Moments later, Lander tried to do the same with another man who’d just attended his immigration hearing. This time, agents also placed Lander in handcuffs. He was detained several hours.

Around 3:15 p.m. ET, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul arrived at the facility where Lander was detained. Roughly an hour later, Lander emerged from the building with and was met with cheers.

The Department of Homeland Security accused Lander of assaulting an agent, but video footage of the incident clearly showed the comptroller simply held onto the men the agents tried to detain. He maintained at the presser that he just wanted the agents to provide him with a warrant authorizing the arrests.

Lander also confirmed that the charges against him had been dropped.

Another Democrat in handcuffs, phony charges later dropped.

Welcome to King Donald’s fascist Amerika!

BuzzFeed: Donald Trump’s Post About Increasing ICE Raids In Blue Cities Is Getting Shredded By Americans Online

One day after the nationwide “No Kings” protests drew out over 5 million demonstrators against the policies and actions of Donald Trump and his administration, Trump issued a harrowing announcement online.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote: “ICE Officers are herewith ordered, by notice of this TRUTH, to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.”

How will they accomplish this? By expanding deportations in Democratic cities. “We must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America’s largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside,” Trump wrote.

“These, and other such Cities, are the core of the Democrat Power Center, where they use Illegal Aliens to expand their Voter Base, cheat in Elections, and grow the Welfare State, robbing good paying Jobs and Benefits from Hardworking American Citizens.”

Daily Beast: Stephen Miller and ICE Barbie in Bitter West Wing Civil War Over Round-Ups

White House Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem—dubbed “ICE Barbie” for her stylized anti-immigration photo ops—were enraged after learning that Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins had called Trump and suggested that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents avoid deporting longtime workers in sectors heavily reliant on migrant labor, Axios reported.

Rollins’ intervention—which one insider described as “minimal”—appeared to sway the president. Last week, Trump floated the idea of carving out exemptions from his mass deportation plans specifically to avoid targeting non-criminal workers on farms and in hotels.

An official policy shift followed soon after. Senior ICE official Tatum King informed regional ICE offices Thursday that “investigations/operations on agriculture (including aquaculture and meatpacking plants), restaurants, and operating hotels” would be paused.

By Monday, the Department of Homeland Security reversed course, notifying staff that the previous guidelines were scrapped and that ICE would resume raids on agricultural businesses, hotels, and restaurants, The Washington Post reported.

Raw Story: Pete Hegseth deploys troops to several states for ICE support

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered 700 military personnel to be deployed to Florida, Louisiana, and Texas for deportation operations.

In a statement on Tuesday, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the troops would support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“These service members, drawn from all components and operating in a Title 10 duty status, will provide logistical support, and conduct administrative and clerical functions associated with the processing of illegal aliens at ICE detention facilities,” Parnell said. “They will not directly participate in law enforcement activities.”

Daily Beast: ICE Pushes to Deport Reporter Arrested at ‘No Kings’ Rally

Attorneys for Mario Guevara, a reporter who live-streamed his own arrest Saturday, say he was detained simply for covering the protest.

An Emmy Award-winning reporter who recorded his own arrest while covering a “No Kings” protest in metro Atlanta now faces possible deportation.

Mario Guevara, a Spanish-language journalist known for his coverage of immigration raids, was live-streaming the anti-Trump rally Saturday when tensions between officers in riot gear and marchers escalated, Fox 5 reported.

Wearing a helmet and a press-labeled vest, Guevara was filming a group of officers in a parking lot when they began moving towards him. Despite identifying himself as a journalist, he was arrested.

Guevara’s attorneys have condemned the arrest—arguing he was detained simply for documenting the protest, according to Fox 5.

On Monday, attorneys successfully petitioned for bond, only to learn that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had lodged a “detainer” against Guevara, blocking his release for 48 hours so ICE officers can take him into custody.

The detainer means the federal government believes Guevara, who is originally from El Salvador, can be deported. Attorney Giovanni Diaz said that while Guevara lacks permanent legal status, he has work authorization and is pursuing a green card through his U.S. citizen son.
