Inquirer: US senator denounces ICE raid on home of Filipino teachers in Hawaii

Sen. Brian Schatz describes the raid as ‘racial profiling and a shameful abuse of power’

Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) has denounced the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on the home of Filipino teachers in Kahului, Maui.

“The reported interrogation and efforts to detain Filipino teachers in their home on Maui by ICE agents is outrageous,” Schatz said in a statement. “This is racial profiling and a shameful abuse of power.”

The teachers and their families were detained at the multi-family home for more than 40 minutes, one of the teachers told The Maui News.

“The whole situation was really overwhelming and traumatic for all of us, but I felt the need to speak out because I felt it could have been handled better, and I really do not want to see that happen again with teachers who are here to help our children, who are here legally as well,” the teacher said.

ICE told Island News the federal search warrant served during the May 6 raid was related to an immigration investigation.

“For the safety of the agents and the occupants, residents of the home were briefly detained and interviewed in addition to the search,” an ICE agent said in a statement. “At the conclusion of the search, HSI special agents left the location without any arrests made.”

“In this case, with educators rousted from their beds at gunpoint, there was no public apology for the harm that was done,” Tui said.

“We’re concerned that, if this was a mistake, what other mistakes are being made or will be made affecting other innocent people.”

Senator Schatz said the ICE raids were “clearly designed to instill fear” among the teachers.

Houston Chronicle: Houston judge orders U.S. to locate Venezuelan refugee seeker deported to El Salvador

A Houston judge on Monday ordered the U.S. government to track down a Venezuelan man who is believed to have been deported to El Salvador after government attorneys told the court they did not know where he was.

Widmer Josneyder Agelviz Sanguino, 24, was taken into Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody last fall after arriving in Houston as a refugee, but his family and attorneys stopped hearing from him on March 15 as his asylum case was awaiting a decision. Days later, his name appeared on a flight manifest published by CBS News identifying the 238 Venezuelan men who had been deported to a mega prison in El Salvador.

Neither his family nor his team has had contact with him since.

Knews: AOC Rips ‘Anti-American’ Trump Over Democratic Arrests

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) criticized President Donald Trump and his administration for being “anti-American” following a confrontation involving Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Democratic lawmakers at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center. Baraka was accused for trespassing and released after arrest. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin accused New Jersey Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, LaMonica McIver, and Robert Menendez of trespassing and assaulting ICE agents.

Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said, “If anyone’s breaking the law in this situation, it’s not members of Congress, it’s the Department of Homeland Security. It’s people like Tom Homan and Secretary Kristi Noem.” She added, “You lay a finger on someone, on Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman … or any of the representatives that were there, you lay a finger on them, we are going to have a problem. Because the people who are breaking the law are the people not abiding by it.”

Independent: Immigrants are being rounded up in Hawaii’s coffee fields and being treated worse than ‘cats and dogs,’ locals say

Armando Rodriguez and his wife Karina have employed immigrant workers on Aloha Star Coffee Farms on the Big Island in Hawaii for decades, but ICE officials are now arresting their workers

Donald Trump’s war on immigration has impacted all corners of the U.S., but now, immigration officials have targeted an isolated patch on Hawaii’s Big Island.

“Even cats and dogs have rights here and in the United States, and they’re being treated better than some of our community members here,” Armando Rodriguez, owner of Aloha Star Coffee Farms, told local station KITV.

He explained that his initiative, Aloha Latinos, has focused on protecting civil rights for Hispanic residents who live with their families on the island.

Yet, many lives were now being torn apart because of the recent raids, he added.

“Our fear has turned into anger. A lot of communities are mad, they’re creating angry people here,” he said.

“It’s terrifying. People today are seeing their parents arrested right in front of them. Children are seeing their parents treated as criminals,” Kona Coffee farmer, Victoria Magana, told KITV.

Newsweek: Woman Faces $1.82M fine for failing to self-deport from US

A Florida woman has reportedly racked up over $1.82 million in civil penalties after failing to comply with a deportation order issued two decades ago.

The 41-year-old undocumented immigrant from Honduras, who has lived in the United States since at least 2005, was fined $500 per day for each day she remained in the country following her removal order, according to documents obtained by CBS News.

Simply absurd! How many undocumented immigrants have a spare $1.82 mil sitting around? And …

… she … is now the mother of three U.S. citizen children.

Miami Herald: Multiple Democrats Under Investigation — DHS Accused of ‘Lying’

A confrontation at the Delaney Hall Detention Center in New Jersey may lead to criminal charges against several House Democrats. The incident has prompted an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) into alleged assaults on ICE officers during a protest at the facility. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested for trespassing after ignoring warnings to leave the premises.

I’ve watched the video of the “assaults”. It was the mayor and House representatives who were assaulted by ICE thugs outside the premises.

MSNBC: Trump’s new offer to undocumented immigrants is a bait-and-switch

When it comes to immigration, President Donald Trump’s second term is getting off to a rocky start. Despite promising the “largest deportation operation in history” and forcing thousands of other federal law enforcement officers to drop their normal work and join forces with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, deportations are nowhere near the record levels he has threatened. With no realistic prospect of hitting 1 million deportations per year, as promised, the Trump administration is instead turning to a new idea: paying people to leave on their own and threatening draconian punishments if they don’t. But as with any “deal” Trump offers, anyone considering the offer should read the fine print first.

And some nonsense from King Donald:

… “maybe someday, with a little work, they can come back in if they’re good people,” and DHS announcing in a statement that the program “may help preserve the option for an illegal alien to re-enter the United States legally.”

The odds of that happening are zippo!

India Today: First flight departs US under Trump’s $1,000 ‘self-deport’ deal

  • DHS launched first charter flight for migrants opting self-deport with USD 1,000 stipend
  • Flight carried 64 people from Honduras and Colombia, departing Houston
  • Participants received travel aid, stipend and chance to return legally later

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has conducted its first charter flight for migrants who agreed to “self-deport” under a new program that offers a USD 1,000 stipend to those voluntarily leaving the United States.

The self-deportation program was announced in March. Since then, the administration has paid for some migrants’ tickets to return to their home countries via commercial airlines. Monday’s flight departed Houston at about 9:30 a.m., carrying 64 people from Honduras and Colombia, according to a DHS official.

A “chance to return legally later”? Unlikely as long as King Donald reigns.

Alternet: ‘Red line has been crossed’: Trump accused of filing ‘bogus charges’ to ‘intimidate’ Dems

House Democratic Leadership has strongly condemned interim U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba’s decision to charge Rep. LaMonica Mclver (D-N.J.), calling it “an attack on the American people.”

The Justice Department announced on Monday that it has filed charges against McIver, accusing her of assaulting law enforcement officers earlier this month at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Newark.

In a statement released Monday, House Democrats said the party “will respond vigorously in the days to come at a time, place and manner of our choosing.”

“The criminal charge against Congresswoman LaMonica McIver is extreme, morally bankrupt and lacks any basis in law or fact,” said the statement, shared by House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on the social platform X.

“Members of Congress have a constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight of the executive branch wherever and whenever it is needed. We are lawfully permitted to show up at any federal facility unannounced to conduct an inspection on behalf of the American people,” the Democratic lawmakers said.

“By visiting the detention center in Newark, Rep. McIver and two other Members of Congress were upholding their oath of office. They didn’t assault anyone, but were themselves aggressively mistreated by illegally masked individuals,” the statement added.

“There is no credible evidence that Rep. McIver engaged in any criminal activity, and she would not have been permitted to tour the facility had she done anything wrong,” the Democratic leadership said.

The statement further said that the proceeding launched “by the so-called U.S. Attorney in New Jersey is a blatant attempt by the Trump administration to intimidate Congress and interfere with our ability to serve as a check and balance on an out-of-control executive branch.”

Sacramento Bee: ‘Multiple Warnings’: Democratic Mayor’s Arrest Sparks Backlash

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested by federal immigration police while supporting Congress members Bonnie Watson Coleman, LaMonica McIver, and Rob Menendez during a tour of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement jail. After moving to a public area following a request to leave, Baraka was seized by officers and charged with trespassing. He was released after several hours, and later expressed concerns about the conditions of detainees and the need for inspections to ensure safety protocols.
