NBC News: Gavin Newsom locks horns with Trump in a politically defining moment

Newsom’s 2028 presidential aspirations hang in the balance as the eyes of the nation are on California’s clash with immigration authorities.

The battle between the president and the governor of the country’s largest state instantly turned Newsom into the face of resistance to President Donald Trump’s expansive interpretation of the authorities of his office and mass-deportation campaign. Newsom, who is a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, has been taking heavy criticism from within his own party over his efforts — in part through his new podcast — to cast himself in the role of conciliator.

Newsom delivered an address Tuesday night that aimed squarely at Trump and was clearly intended for a national audience.

“This isn’t just about protests here in Los Angeles,” he said. “When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commander the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation. This is about all of us. This is about you. California may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next. Democracy is under assault before our eyes. This moment we have feared has arrived.”

Newsom has also been mounting his own messaging offensive, including on X, where he posted what appeared to be photos of troops crowded on a floor, apparently attempting to rest.

“You sent your troops here without fuel, food, water or a place to sleep. Here they are — being forced to sleep on the floor, piled on top of one another. If anyone is treating our troops disrespectfully, it is you @realDonaldTrump,” Newsom said on X.

On Sunday, Newsom chided Trump “border czar” Tom Homan, saying in an MSNBC interview: “Tom, arrest me. Let’s go.”

Late Monday, Newsom sat for a “Pod Save America” podcast recording in which he cast Trump’s actions as unconstitutional and said some of those assigned to Los Angeles — in his view, unnecessarily — were pried away from fentanyl investigations, and potentially from border operations, for “this theatrical display of toughness by a president of the United States who is unhinged.”

By Tuesday morning, Newsom accused Trump and his top White House deportation architect Stephen Miller of sheltering insurrectionists.

“The only people defending insurrectionists are you and @realDonaldTrump. Or, are we pretending like you didn’t pardon 1500 of them?”

Politico: Trump administration considers slashing federal education money for California

California’s public schools receive nearly $8 billion annually from the U.S. Education Department.

The Trump administration is considering cutting federal education funds to California, according to people familiar with the administration’s thinking. The discussion comes as Gov. Gavin Newsom and President Donald Trump feud over the president’s deployment of the National Guard to LA to stop immigration protests.

A Trump administration employee, who was not permitted to speak publicly about the administration’s plans, told POLITICO the Education Department may stop the disbursement of “formula funds,” which are awards based on a predetermined formula created by Congress. The administration has not yet reached a decision, according to a separate person familiar with the discussions. The timing for a potential decision is also not finalized.

“That is one of the tools and the opportunities that we have with California,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said of the potential to pull the state’s funds on Tuesday at an event hosted by Bloomberg News. “And I think it’s right that we make them aware that that is a risk that they run.”

So far the courts usually block the funding cuts. Bully boy King Donald is too drunk on power (that he doesn’t actually have) to quit and too stupid to learn.

Defense News: LA deployments to cost $134 million and last 60 days, Pentagon says

The military’s deployment of almost 5,000 National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles in response to immigration protests will cost around $134 million and last 60 days, the Pentagon’s acting comptroller told lawmakers in a hearing Tuesday.

That funding will come from the Defense Department’s operations and maintenance budget and cover travel, housing, food and other incidental expenses, Bryn MacDonnel said at a House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense hearing. Together, the description gives the clearest sense yet of the military’s bill for the administration’s controversial deployments to the city.

And it’s only “necessary” because ICE thugs insist on showing up in a militarized convoy instead of doing their raids professionally and discretely. You put on a show, you get an audience, you got what you asked for, suckers!

SFGate: ‘Unbelievable’: Protest against ICE arrests shuts down San Francisco court

Multiple people were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in downtown San Francisco on Tuesday morning, merely 12 hours after thousands of protesters took to the streets in the Mission to rally against the widespread raids taking place across California.

The news, first reported by the NBC Bay Area, unfolded around 9:30 a.m. outside of the San Francisco Immigration Court at 100 Montgomery St. The reporter captured footage of ICE agents wearing masks escorting a person into a parked car. About an hour later, two other people were reportedly taken into unmarked cars. One told the NBC reporter that he was from Guatemala.

The public uprising continued into Monday night, when an estimated 9,000 protesters rallied at San Francisco’s 24th and Mission BART Plaza late into the frigid June night.

San Francisco Immigration Court canceled the rest of its hearings on Tuesday afternoon and closed the courthouse because of the protests, NBC Bay Area reported

Mirror: LA immigration protests LIVE: Mass protests spread to new cities, with tear gas thrown in Dallas

The President sent another 2,000 National Guard troops to confront immigration protesters in LA, as the demonstrations spread to other US cities

President Donald Trump has defended his decision to send another 2,000 National Guard troops to confront immigration protesters in Los Angeles, as the demonstrations spread to other US cities.

The protests began Friday in downtown LA after federal immigration authorities arrested more than 40 people across the city. Trump on Monday authorized the deployment of 700 Marines and additional National Guard troops to LA as the protests entered a fourth day. It came after an initial 300 troops arrived in the city on Sunday.

The demonstrations spread to other cities including Boston, Houston and Philadelphia on Monday. In Dallas, hundreds of protesters gathered for a rally which police declared was “unlawful.” Authorities said one person was arrested.

Activists plan more events Tuesday in New York, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta.

The protests that have roiled Los Angeles seem to be spreading across the country, as activists gathered Tuesday in New York, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta and elsewhere.

Rallies protesting ICE raids and the government’s immigration policies have been planned across California and beyond this week. A series of so-called No Kings demonstrations is planned nationwide for Saturday.

Since Monday, NBC News counted at least 25 rallies and demonstrations coast to coast. Some involved only a few dozen participants, while others attracted thousands to make a stand against the detention and removal of suspected undocumented migrants.

Newsweek: The Scholar Who Predicted America’s Breakdown Says It’s Just Beginning

Fifteen years ago, smack in the middle of Barack Obama‘s first term, amid the rapid rise of social media and a slow recovery from the Great Recession, a professor at the University of Connecticut issued a stark warning: the United States was heading into a decade of growing political instability.

It sounded somewhat contrarian at the time. The global economy was clawing back from the depths of the financial crisis, and the American political order still seemed anchored in post-Cold War optimism — though cracks were beginning to emerge, as evidenced by the Tea Party uprising. But Peter Turchin, an ecologist-turned-historian, had the data.

“Quantitative historical analysis reveals that complex human societies are affected by recurrent—and predictable—waves of political instability,” Turchin wrote in the journal Nature in 2010, forecasting a spike in unrest around 2020, driven by economic inequality, “elite overproduction” and rising public debt.

Now, with the nation consumed by polarization in the early months of a second Donald Trump presidency, institutional mistrust at all-time highs, and deepening political conflict, Turchin’s prediction appears to have landed with uncanny accuracy.

In the wake of escalating protests and the deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles under President Trump’s immigration crackdown, Turchin spoke with Newsweek about the latest escalation of political turbulence in the United States—and the deeper structural forces he believes have been driving the country toward systemic crisis for more than a decade.

In his 2010 analysis published by Nature, Turchin identified several warning signs in the domestic electorate: stagnating wages, a growing wealth gap, a surplus of educated elites without corresponding elite jobs, and an accelerating fiscal deficit. All of these phenomena, he argued, had reached a turning point in the 1970s. “These seemingly disparate social indicators are actually related to each other dynamically,” he wrote at the time.

“Nearly every one of those indicators has intensified,” Turchin said in an interview with Newsweek, citing real wage stagnation, the effects of artificial intelligence on the professional class and increasingly unmanageable public finances.

Huffington Post: ‘It’s Entrapment’: ICE Allegedly Kept Immigrants In Court Building Overnight

One advocacy group CEO said he’s heard of up to 200 asylum-seekers detained in the federal building since Tuesday. A representative for ICE denied this claim.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is accused of detaining and holding asylum-seekers overnight in a downtown Los Angeles court building after they appeared for routine check-ins this week, prompting calls for an investigation into possible human rights abuses.

Up to 200 people have been detained since Tuesday at the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building, with at least one pregnant woman and a 2-year-old child among those held overnight, Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, told HuffPost Friday.

“It’s not a facility that’s designed to hold anyone overnight. So they have folks in interview rooms and offices, up to 30 people. They’ve set up some makeshift tents as well,” Proaño said, citing information obtained by detainees and lawyers who have had access to the building.

Immigration attorney Lizbeth Mateo told CBS News that several of her clients were among those detained and taken to a basement in the building.

An expectant couple and their two children, one of whom is a U.S. citizen, were left to sleep in a room without beds and given limited access to food and water. Eventually, the pregnant mother and her children were released, while the husband remained in custody as of early Friday, Mateo said.

CBS also reported that it spoke with people waiting outside the building who claimed to have relatives inside the basement who were texting them.

A spokesperson for ICE denied the reports, however, telling HuffPost in an email Friday that it has not detained “individuals inside the basements or tents etc.”

Proaño said that LULAC has been told that as many as 60 people remain detained in the building as of Friday, while others have been released or moved to Texas for deportation.

Never forget:

California Governor Plans To File Lawsuit Against Trump Over National Guard Deployment To Protests

Gavin Newsom said he planned to file a lawsuit against Trump in response to the administration’s extraordinary deployment of the National Guard to confront immigration protesters who took to the streets in Los Angeles.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he planned to file a lawsuit Monday against President Donald Trump in response to the administration’s extraordinary deployment of the National Guard to confront immigration protesters who took to the streets in Los Angeles.

“Commandeering a state’s National Guard without consulting the Governor of that state is illegal and immoral,” Newsom, a Democrat, told MSNBC on Sunday.

Newsom, meanwhile, has repeatedly said that California authorities had the situation under control. He mocked Trump for posting a congratulatory message to the Guard on social media before troops had even arrived in Los Angeles, and he told MSNBC that Trump never floated deploying the Guard during a Friday phone call. He called Trump a “stone cold liar.”

Huffington Post: Latinas For Trump Co-Founder Rips Trump Immigration Policies As ‘Unacceptable And Inhumane

A Republican Florida state senator who co-founded the group Latinas for Trump is condemning and distancing herself from President Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policies, calling them “unacceptable and inhumane.”

“This is not what we voted for. I have always supported Trump, through thick and thin. However, this is unacceptable and inhumane,” Sen. Ileana Garcia said in a statement Saturday.

Garcia, whose district of Miami-Dade County is overwhelmingly Hispanic or Latino and voted for Trump during the last election, said she sides with Trump’s efforts to target immigrants who are criminals, but said his targeting of those seeking lawful citizenship is unjust.

She doesn’t yet understand that it’s not about criminals. Trump is a racist, has been for decades, was sued in federal court for refusing to rent to blacks. This is all about keeping America white — like King Donald.
