Wichita Eagle: Two Dozen Arrested in Sweeping ICE Operation

ICE has reportedly arrested two dozen individuals for suspected federal immigration law violations, with advocacy groups claiming the number is as high as 26. Critics argued that officers surveilled workers prior to the detentions. ICE stated that some of those arrested have criminal histories, including seven with final orders of removal. The arrests occurred during a targeted operation, though officials have not disclosed the specific locations.

Advocacy groups have criticized the timing and tactics, calling them disruptive and harmful to local communities. ICE stated, “ICE remains dedicated to upholding the immigration system’s integrity while prioritizing the removals of aliens who undermine the safety and security of the United States.”

ICE said the operation followed an investigation identifying multiple alleged immigration law violators. The agency has declined to release full identities and charges.

Advocacy groups reported that the detained workers were traveling to a Mount Nittany Medical Center construction site. The groups have trained volunteers to monitor ICE activity and called for greater transparency on the arrests.

Centre County Rapid Response Network representatives jointly stated, “A main focus of CCRRN is protecting the constitutional right to due process. If we take this right away from some, we run the risk of taking it away from all.”

The representatives added, “Due process appears to be eroding, and unless we all have these rights, eventually many of us may not have them. We have a duty to care for all segments of our population, believing that unless all are safe, none are safe.”

Pennsylvania State Police initially said troopers had no involvement in the Centre County ICE activity. They later clarified that troopers stopped nearby but left after being told operations were underway.

The Rapid Response Network claimed the arrests have harmed public safety perceptions among immigrant and nonimmigrant residents. The group called for more information on due process and detention conditions.

Wichita Eagle: ICE Targets Sanctuary City — Mayor Faces Defiance

Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons claimed that some Boston Police officers have shared information with ICE despite the city’s sanctuary policies. City officials and immigrant-rights advocates have criticized the actions, arguing they undermine community relations. ICE has noted that it plans to increase enforcement in sanctuary jurisdictions. Lyons said, “We have so many men and women of the Boston Police Department and other jurisdictions that are so pro-ICE, that want to work with us, and that are actually helping us behind the scenes.” He stated, “Sanctuary does not mean safer streets. It means more criminal aliens out and about the neighborhood. But 100%, you will see a larger ICE presence.”

Lyons reported an alleged covert cooperation by some officers. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu affirmed the city’s sanctuary status, saying Boston follows the law but will resist federal demands to revoke it.

Wu said, “Silence in the face of oppression is not an option. The U.S. Attorney General asked for a response by today. So here it is…Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures.”

The Boston Trust Act limits city cooperation with federal agencies. Attorney General Pam Bondi sent letters to sanctuary jurisdictions seeking compliance plans and warned of potential federal fund cuts for noncompliance.

Local officials have called the enforcement and funding threats politically motivated. Bondi stated, “The Department of Justice will continue bringing litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies around the country.”

Lyons said, “What I think local leaders don’t understand, is they need to talk to the men and women on the ground, because … there are so many of these criminal aliens that keep getting released to go out and commit more crimes that the local law enforcement have to deal with.”

Bondi concluded, “We are going to send in law enforcement just like we did during the LA riots, just like we’re doing here in Washington, DC, and if they’re not going to keep their citizens safe, Donald Trump will keep them safe.”

A NPR/PBS News/Marist poll published in July found 52% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s current approach to immigration enforcement, a shift from earlier support for stricter policies. In contrast, a Gallup poll in 2024 showed 55% of Americans wanted less immigration.

The raids have drawn criticism from local advocacy groups, who argue they disrupt communities and undermine trust in law enforcement. Federal officials, however, defend the actions as necessary to enforce immigration laws and prioritize public safety. The increased enforcement comes amid ongoing national debates over immigration policy and border security.

Bass said, “Los Angeles is a city of immigrants — 3.8 million people and about 50% of our population is Latino. So when the raids started, fear spread. The masked men in unmarked cars, no license plate, no real uniforms, jumping out of cars with rifles and snatching people off the street.”

Local farmers have reported declines in activity due to the expanded ICE raids. Bass criticized agents’ use of masks and unmarked vehicles, saying it fuels fears of kidnappings.

Bass stated that ICE’s tactics are “leading a lot of people to think maybe kidnappings were taking place. How do you have masked men who then say, well, we are federal officials with no identification?”

Bass stated, “Let me tell you, we have a Los Angeles Police Department that has to deal with crime in this city every single day, and they’re not masked, they stay here. The masked men parachute in, stay here for a while and leave. So you enter a profession like policing, like law enforcement, I’m sorry, I don’t think you have a right to have a mask and snatch people off the street.”

Bass added, “It’s not just the deportation. It’s the fear that sets in when raids occur, when people are snatched off the street. Even people who are here legally, even people who are U.S. citizens, have been detained. Immigrants who have their papers and were showing up for their annual immigration appointment were detained when they showed up doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing.”
