Deccan Herald: The world suddenly has a plausible alternative to US treasuries

Bond traders will be trying to gauge who blinks first, will it be the Fed or President Trump? If both stick to their current stance every Treasury auction is a landmine which investors will fear stepping in to.

Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury have tumbled about 40 basis points this year, briefly pushed below 4% Monday by President Donald Trump’s barrage of tariffs that economists say raise the risk of a recession.

In contrast, comparable rates in both Europe and Japan have gone up. In Germany, the 10-year bund at 2.61% reflects the prospect of a flood of bond issuance as the government ramps up defense spending. Meanwhile, the rate on 10-year Japanese bonds has soared after spending years around zero and is now around 1.25% as investors brace for tighter monetary policy there.

While both are still well below Treasury yields, they’re at levels that makes them look more attractive than Treasuries to European and Japanese investors who hedge their dollar exposure when buying US securities. That might entice investors to shift allocations to their home markets, where the policy outlook appears more stable.

New York Post: Trump admin freezes $1B in federal funding to Cornell, $790M to Northwestern amid investigations into both schools

More harassment of elite universities by an oaf who wasn’t bright enough to be admitted to one:

The Trump administration is freezing more than $1 billion in federal funds to Cornell and $790 million in funding for Northwestern University in response to civil rights investigations at both schools.

“The money was frozen in connection with several ongoing, credible, and concerning Title VI investigations,” a Trump admin official told Fox News.

The pause largely involves grants and contracts to both schools with the departments of Agriculture, Defense, Education and Health and Human Services, two administration officials told the New York Times.

USA Today: Trump wants to revive ‘alien registration’ for immigrants. Advocates say no.

Another incredibly stupid idea from King Donald and his band of sycophants. This would only cause hassles and an un-American “Papers, please!” society for legal immigrants who aren’t exempted. Illegal immigrants won’t bother to register.

  • Immigrant advocates filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over a revived “alien registration” law requiring immigrants to register with the government or face criminal prosecution.
  • The lawsuit argues that the rule would create a “show me your papers” environment and expose non-citizens, including legal residents, to potential criminal charges.
  • The rule, set to take effect on April 11, mandates non-citizens carry proof of registration or face fines and imprisonment, raising concerns about potential discrimination and harassment.

New York Post: Elon Musk rips ‘moron’ Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro: ‘Dumber than a sack of bricks’

It’s a dog-eat-dog world, and it’s always entertaining to see the mutts chewing on one another. “Dumber than a sack of bricks” applies equally to F’Elon Musk as well as to Peter Navarro.

Musk, 53, responded Tuesday to the trade adviser’s suggestion on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Monday that the Tesla boss was “not a car manufacturer” but “a car assembler,” pointing to the electric vehicle company’s importing of batteries and other key components to manufacture its cars.

“Navarro is truly a moron. What he says here is demonstrably false,” Musk wrote on X, adding in a subsequent post in which he tagged the “Re—d Finder”: “Tesla has the most American-made cars. Navarro is dumber than a sack of bricks.”

Daily Post Nigeria: Tariffs: French President calls for suspension of investment in US

What goes around, comes around!

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday called urged European companies to suspend planned investment in the United States after President Donald Trump announced sweeping global tariffs on American imports.

He further stated that the response to the reciprocal tariffs would be more massive than its earlier retaliation to US steel and aluminum tariffs.

Macron described the tariffs as brutal and unfounded and a shock for international trade, and that Europe must respond industry by industry.

Raw Story: ‘Turbulence far away’: NYT exposes Trump ‘moneymaking weekend’ amid huge ‘market meltdown’

As the global markets were tumbling at record levels, President Donald Trump was reportedly on a money-making spree in Mar-a-Lago.

As everyday folks were checking in on their 401ks and worrying about losing their Social Security payments, Trump’s family was pushing numerous separate money-making schemes, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

In an article entitled “Trump Family’s Cash Registers Ring as Financial Meltdown Plays Out,” the Times reports, “The party was on at a Saudi-backed LIV Golf tournament at the president’s Doral resort in Florida and a fund-raiser at Mar-a-Lago, even as markets tumbled.”

Guardian: Less Than Half in U.S. Now Sympathetic Toward Israelis

Support for establishment of independent Palestinian state remains at majority level

Although Americans remain more likely to say their sympathies in the Middle East situation are with the Israelis rather than the Palestinians, the 46% expressing support for Israel is the lowest in 25 years of Gallup’s annual tracking of this measure on its World Affairs survey. The previous 51% low point in this trend of Americans’ sympathy for Israelis was recorded both last year and in 2001.

At the same time, the 33% of U.S. adults who now say they sympathize with the Palestinians is up six percentage points from last year and the highest reading by two points.

Mediaite: ‘He Doesn’t Give a F**k’: White House Official Tells Washington Post Trump Has Reached Peak ‘Not Giving a F**k’

President Donald Trump has reached the “peak of not giving a fuck,” one White House official told The Washington Post for a lengthy report on what went on behind the scenes leading up to the president’s massive tariff announcement this week.

“He’s at the peak of just not giving a fuck anymore,” a White House official familiar with Trump’s thinking told The Post. “Bad news stories? Doesn’t give a fuck. He’s going to do what he’s going to do. He’s going to do what he promised to do on the campaign trail.”

Fox News: Trump threatens to bomb Iran unless they end nuclear weapons program and begin talks on new deal

King Donald’s diplomatic toolbox seems to be limited to (1) bombs and (2) tariffs.

Trump told NBC on Saturday that “If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing,” he said. “But there’s a chance that if they don’t make a deal, that I will do secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago.”

Law & Crime: ‘The president possesses no such authority’: Lawsuit pits Kavanaugh against 5th Circuit in challenge to Trump’s order that aims to ‘dictate’ new rules for national elections

President Donald Trump is attempting to dictate the rules for national elections in violation of both federal law and the U.S. Constitution, a lawsuit filed Monday in Washington, D.C., federal court alleges.

On March 25, the 45th and 47th president issued Executive Order 14248, titled: “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.” The order broadly seeks to reshape how elections are administered in the country by, among other things, purporting to enforce a requirement that all voters prove their citizenship by way of formal documentation and by putting a stop to vote-by-mail systems that count ballots postmarked by, but received after, Election Day.

The plaintiffs, led by the Democratic National Committee, claim in their 74-page lawsuit that the executive order “asserts unprecedented authority” for the presidency over election administration “on a host of topics.” And this effort, the lawsuit claims, contravenes a number of federal laws and the explicit constitutional carveouts for election authority granted to the states and U.S. Congress.

“In the United States of America, the President does not get to dictate the rules of our elections,” the complaint begins. “The Framers of our federal Constitution foresaw that self-interested and self-aggrandizing leaders might seek to corrupt our democratic system of government to expand and preserve their own power. They therefore created a decentralized system of elections based upon separated powers divided among the leaders elected by — and closest to — the people.”
