Alternet: ‘Theft and destruction’: Trump’s escalating self-dealing exposed in new report

The big lie:

During his 2016 campaign, Donald Trump insisted that if he defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, he would maintain a strict separation between his business activities and the White House. And one of MAGA Republicans’ talking points is that Trump cares so deeply about the United States that he was willing to step away from his business, put his son Eric Trump in charge of the Trump Organization, and take a hit financially in order to be president and “make American great again.”

The reality:

But in fact, President Trump’s net worth has increased substantially since 2016 and continues to increase. Trump, according to his critics, is monetizing his presidency in a wide range of ways,

The Guardian reporter continues, “He incurred numerous accusations of first-term conflicts of interest, as foreign officials from 20 countries descended on his hotels, while Secret Service agents in Trump’s security detail were made to pay premium rates, pouring at least $10m into his bank account. Such unprecedented disregard for time-honored ethical boundaries was shocking at the time. Now, it looks merely quaint.”

During his second term, Pilkington notes, Trump has monetized his presidency with everything from promoting Tesla vehicles to receiving a jet as a gift from the Qatari government.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) told The Guardian that Trump is operating a “pay-for-play presidency.” And Kathleen Clark, a law professor at Washington University in St. Louis, laments that Trump and his allies “have mastered the technique of flooding the zone” by “doing so much so fast that they are overwhelming the ability of ethics groups and institutions to respond.”

MSNBC: Trump admin accepts jet from Qatar, ignoring legal restrictions and bipartisan pushback

Team Trump’s decision to accept the Qatari “gift” doesn’t end the controversy; it starts the controversy.

The Times’ report added that the Defense Department “has not given an estimate of when the work on the Qatari plane might be done, even though Mr. Trump and the White House have made clear the president wants it soon, perhaps even by the end of the year.”

What the president “wants” is likely to prove irrelevant: NBC News recently reported that converting the luxury jet will “take years to complete.”

Indeed, it’s worth emphasizing that the administration’s decision to accept the Qatari “gift” doesn’t end the controversy; it starts the controversy.

Now that this plan is moving forward, the president and his White House team should prepare for a series of questions for which there are no easy answers. Where will Trump find the money to pay for this “free” plane? Why does he keep pretending that this “gift” isn’t for him personally, even after he’s publicly suggested otherwise? How does Trump intend to overcome the seemingly obvious fact that the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause still exists, and it appears to prohibit exactly this kind of arrangement?

Why was Attorney General Pam Bondi involved in approving this process after having served as a paid registered lobbyist for Qatar? How does Trump plan to explain away his earlier condemnations of presidents accepting foreign gifts? Why is the president apparently indifferent to the fact that even many of his Republican allies have expressed opposition to this idea? Will Congress have any role in approving the transfer, as is required for such gestures of international generosity?

Sun: Bizarre moment Trump plays ‘white genocide’ video as he schools President Ramaphosa in fiery White House meeting

Trump handed out article printouts that he said proved his point

PRESIDENT Donald Trump confronted South Africa’s leader with a video he claimed supported his allegations of white persecution in the country.

Trump dimmed the lights and shushed President Cyril Ramaphosa in a bizarre moment where he showed the video that purported to show evidence of a genocide of white farmers in South Africa.

Trump hosted Ramaphosa at the White House on Wednesday to confront him about claims that South Africa’s government isn’t punishing people who kill white farmers.

Ramaphosa tried to speak to Trump while the clip started to play, but Trump pointed at the video, telling him to pay attention.

Jerk! And later King Donald admits that it might all have been a pile of BS:

Following the meeting, Trump said he wasn’t sure if there was a genocide happening in South Africa or not.

Trump has cut off foreign aid to South Africa based on the claims, which stem from a land reform law.

He accused the country’s government of taking land from white farmers and fuelling violence against them with “hateful rhetoric and government actions.”

Given South Africa’s history of apartheid, some redistribution of land and other resources is to be expected.

Axios World: Trump administration accepts Qatari 747 to serve as Air Force One

The U.S. accepted Qatar’s gift of a Boeing 747 to serve as the new Air Force Onethe Pentagon said Wednesday, despite the ethical quandaries and potential constitutional violations it entails.

President Trump has brushed off any concerns about the appearance of accepting the $400 million gift despite objections from Democrats and some Republicans.

Trump scoffed at the criticism, saying it would be “stupid” to turn down a new Air Force One.

The Grifter-in-Chief gets what the Grifter-in-Chief desires.

The big question now is, “When will the Qataris call in the favor, and what will they want?”

Rolling Stone: Scott Bessent Compares Trump’s Qatari Jet Gift to the Statue of Liberty

It’s not the same

No, Qatar‘s royal family gifting a $400 million Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet known as a “flying palace” to the government that will reportedly then go to Donald Trump‘s presidential library is not the same as France giving the Statue of Liberty to the American people. But that is what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent tried to claim on Sunday.

“Even if Qatar isn’t asking for anything in return now for the jet, I mean, that’s a bill that could come due,” Jake Tapper, host of CNN’s State of the Union said to Bessent. “Nobody… just gives a $400 million jet just to be nice.”

“Well, I don’t know, Jake,” Bessent said. “The French gave us the Statue of Liberty. The British gave us the Resolute Desk. I’m not sure they asked for anything in advance.”

Trump’s bozos are just too dense to get it!

Intelligencer: Donald Trump Is a Crook, But He’s Their Crook

What does seem genuinely new, even by the standards of America’s warped history, is the unabashed corruption. No president, really, has favor-traded like Trump. No president has ever tried to blatantly enrich himself like this while in office. No president has ever hung a for-sale sign over the White House — not like this, anyway. Trump is poised to accept a $400 million luxury jet from the Qatari royal family, which feels like something of a capstone to his latest corruption binge. He would be able to use the plane while in the White House and transfer it to his presidential foundation when he’s out of office. Trump’s inaugural committee also gobbled up $239 million from wealthy business interests who are desperate to curry favor with such a nakedly transactional president. The amount far outstrips the $107 million Trump raised for his committee back in 2017, and since there is no way to spend so much cash on dinner and events, it appears Trump might have a slush fund for the rest of his life.

And then there’s his crypto hustle ….
