Alternet: ‘It’s a real gut punch’: Rural voters ‘stunned’ by Trump’s damage

“Daily Blast” Podcaster Greg Sargent reports rural Trump voters are starting to feel the pain from their November vote for President Donald Trump.

“There’s the Trump tariffs, which hit farm country hard. There are these enormous health care cuts, … which are creating these huge problems for rural hospitals across the country. Again, that’s a real lifeline in those places. Many of them have very little access to health care,” Sargent told guest Lynlee Thorne, political director for organizing network RuralGroundGame.org.

Thorne’s organization calls and visits registered Western Virginia voters who don’t consistently participate in recent elections, alerting them of upcoming cuts to Medicaid and the insurance marketplaces as well as cost increases from Trump’s tariffs.

She said breaking the news to residents has not been easy for the organization’s field workers.

“People are stunned that this is happening,” Thorne told Sargent. “Sometimes our volunteers are emotionally struggling because they feel like they are breaking horrific news to people in real time. And people are p—— and scared and feel a little blindsided. So, while those of us who have been paying attention are well aware of these cuts, this is devastating news to a lot of people in rural spaces.

recent New York Times article covered the anger of Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) at her fellow Republicans’ willingness to eliminate pivotal public radio broadcasts her largely rural state, and others. Public radio is often the only lifeline to local news and weather because piped in music and talk radio — which is frequently the only signal on rural station radios — rarely alerts listeners to hazardous storms and local events.

Murkowski told the Times she was outraged by her co-workers readiness to deprive their voters of critical information for Trump.

“You had, I think, a blind allegiance to the president’s desires when it came to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting,” Murkowski told the Times. “… what I … object to is when we, as the authorizers and the appropriators, do our job, and then we have the White House come around and say: ‘We don’t care what you did. We want you to do this.’”

Sargent said for years Republican lawmakers “could be counted on to defend their constituents a little bit” despite their prejudice against public radio. But now “Trump comes along and waves a magic wand, they just fall in line.”

“It’s a real gut punch,” said Thorne. “And I think something for people to keep in mind is that it’s not just the radio stations — because a lot of rural people even now cannot get radio reception in their rural area from their home. So often when there is a crisis or a power outage or something similar, people are having to go to their neighbors who might be able to get radio reception and hear that news through the grapevine.”

CNBC: House Republican tax bill skipped ACA credits — marketplace health insurance will get pricier without them

  • Premium tax credits under the enhanced Affordable Care Act were not included in the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that House Republicans passed on Thursday.
  • Without action from Congress, the subsidies are on track to expire by the end of 2025.
  • “Pretty much everyone, almost everybody who’s buying their own health insurance, now would see their costs go up,” said Cynthia Cox, vice president and director of the program on the ACA at KFF.

But the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” is missing something health care advocates hoped to see: an extension of the insurance premium tax credits under the enhanced Affordable Care Act that are set to expire at the end of the year. The credits’ absence is notable as the bill includes other proposed changes to the ACA marketplace, experts say.

The ACA’s enhanced premium credits help make health insurance policies through the marketplace more affordable. Eligible applicants can use the credit to lower insurance premium costs upfront or claim the tax break when filing their return.

Instead of a lower-income person paying 2% of their income on their premium, they pay nothing, according to KFF, a health policy research nonprofit.

Without the extension, nearly all subsidized ACA enrollees can expect their monthly premiums to rise, said Cynthia Cox, vice president and director of the program on the ACA at KFF.

Yet another way to hurt the poor!

MSNBC: Following vote from Senate Republicans, another ex-con joins Team Trump

It’s not common for people to transition from prison to a diplomatic position in Paris, but in Trump world, strange things happen.

Two weeks after Election Day 2024, Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama assured the public that Donald Trump wouldn’t choose “a criminal” for a governmental position. About a week later, the then-president-elect tapped Peter Navarro, who completed a prison sentence earlier this year after being convicted for contempt of Congress, for an advisory post at the White House.

Trump also announced his intention to nominate Charles Kushner — despite his own criminal past — to serve as the U.S. ambassador to France. As NBC News reported, the Senate has now confirmed Kushner to the post.

Seriously, folks, who’s the biggest crook here?

  1. Peter Navarro, convicted of 2 counts of contempt of Congress.
  2. Charles Kushner, pleaded guilty 18 counts of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion, and witness tampering
  3. King Donald, convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records.

King Donald is the hands down winner!

Navarro & Kushner are petty crooks compared to the King!!!

MSNBC: As Trump blames Biden for the shrinking economy, here’s who really owns this crisis

During the campaign, there were repeated warnings about what would happen if Donald Trump went through with his promise of sweeping global tariffs. Just over 100 days into his second term, we’re seeing those warnings come to life.

On Wednesday, the Commerce Department reported that the U.S. economy shrank at an annual rate of 0.3% during the first quarter, marking the first quarter of negative growth since Q1 of 2022. In a Truth Social post, Trump quickly tried to pass the blame for that number onto Joe Biden. “This is Biden’s Stock Market, not Trump’s. I didn’t take over until January 20th,” Trump wrote.

But the truth is, Trump isn’t the only one who deserves blame here. If I’m a Democrat, I’m not blaming this all on Trump. Republicans in the Senate had a chance on Wednesday to take a stand against these tariffs and terminate the “national emergency” the president used to implement them. There’s no national emergency that could justify what the president has done. Republicans know that.

Before Trump took the White House, the U.S. economy was the envy of the world. Republicans needed to protect that economy, and they had the opportunity to do that with Wednesday’s vote. But, in the end, only three Republican senators were brave enough to take a stand against Trump. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska were the only Republicans to tell the administration that they refused to forfeit all of their power on tariffs to the White House.

The American people will feel the impact of Trump’s tariffs — if they haven’t already. When the next election comes around, the same Republicans who refused to stand up to the president can’t go on the campaign trail and point their finger at Trump. Those Republicans own this. The Republican senators who refused to join their colleagues on Wednesday own it. Republican House members who have stood idly by as Trump wreaks havoc on the economy own it.

Under Trump, elected Republicans have given up their power. They had a chance to take back their constitutionally mandated power on Wednesday — all but three said “no” and effectively told the American people that they wrap their arms around this economy, around a possible recession, and they take full credit for it.
