Washington Examiner: Texas Republican warns against ‘demonizing’ ICE agents, claiming ‘1,000% increase’ in attacks

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) said it is wrong for people to be “demonizing” Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, suggesting “a balance” should be found in the deportation efforts.

The only “balance” we need is to be rid of ICE, whatever it takes!

Gonzales, the Republican Congressional Hispanic Conference chairman, appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday after Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), who said the Biden administration’s handling of border security was “not working.” However, the senator said the nation’s response to illegal immigration has “swung drastically in another direction,” claiming this new response is not what U.S. citizens want.

Gonzales responded to Kelly’s statements by saying the number of stories of U.S. citizens “turned upside down” greatly outnumber the “sad” stories of deportations.

“And to be demonizing ICE agents is not right. You know right now, ICE agents have had a 1,000% increase on attacks, yet they’re seeing a huge increase in the amount of people that want to serve. There’s currently 10,000 vacancies, and they have nearly 100,000 applications,” Gonzales said on CBS’s Face the Nation.

Gonzales also said he thinks “a balance” can be found in focusing on “the worst of the worst” in the deportation efforts.

To repeat what I said above: The only “balance” we need is to be rid of ICE, whatever it takes!

NBC News: Despite promise to remove ‘worst of the worst,’ ICE has arrested only 6% of known immigrant murderers

After six months of aggressive immigration enforcement and promises to focus on deporting violent criminals, the Trump administration has arrested and detained a small fraction of the undocumented immigrants already known to Immigration and Customs Enforcement as having been convicted of sexual assault and homicide, internal ICE data obtained by NBC News shows.

The data is a tally of every person booked by ICE from Oct. 1 through May 31, part of which was during the Biden administration. It shows a total of 185,042 people arrested and booked into ICE facilities during that time; 65,041 of them have been convicted of crimes. The most common categories of crimes they committed were immigration and traffic offenses.

Almost half of the people currently in ICE custody have neither been convicted of nor charged with any crime, other ICE data shows.

But they’re not capturing and deporting the great majority of serious criminals — most illegal-immigrant murderers and rapists are still on the loose:

The new data obtained by NBC News shows that from Oct. 1 to May 31, ICE arrested 752 people convicted of homicide and 1,693 people convicted of sexual assault, meaning that at the absolute most, the Trump administration has detained only 6% of the undocumented immigrants known to ICE to have been convicted of homicide and 11% of those known to ICE to have been convicted of sexual assault.

Guardian: Ice arrests of migrants with no criminal history surging under Trump

Guardian analysis sharply contradicts president’s claim that officials are targeting ‘criminals’ for deportation from US

The federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agency has exponentially increased the arrest and detention of immigrants without any criminal history since the second Trump administration took office, a data analysis by the Guardian shows.

The information sharply contradicts Donald Trump’s claims the authorities are targeting “criminals” for deportation as part of his aggressive anti-immigration agenda.

According to numbers gathered from Ice and the Vera Institute of Justice, after Trump returned to the White House in late January there was a steep surge in arrests of immigrants, in general. One of the sharpest increases in arrest numbers has been of immigrants with pending charges, who have not yet been convicted of any crimes.

But the biggest increase has been people with no charges at all. Between early January, right before the inauguration, and June, there has been an 807% increase in the arrest of immigrants with no criminal record.

In other words the incessant chants of “Criminals! Criminals! Criminals!” coming from the White House / Homeland Security / ICE are a bunch of BS. They’re deporting anyone they can drag out of home or work or snatch off the streets.
