Moneywise: Social Security Administration issues a statement countering Elon’s claim of a ‘huge problem’ with dead beneficiaries, says it gets roughly 3M death notices a year. But how accurate are they?

Amid widespread confusion and accusations from Elon Musk suggesting “millions of dead people” are receiving benefits, the Social Security Administration has issued a clarification.

In a recent press release, the SSA says it receives more than three million death notices every year. The release offers a glimpse behind the curtain to explain how deaths are reported to the agency and why the SSA believes that, contrary to Musk’s claims, the records on file are “highly accurate.”

“Of these millions of death reports received each year, less than one-third of 1 percent are erroneously reported deaths that need to be corrected,” the SSA states in its press release.

Moneywise: Peter Schiff blasts US-China trade deal

Economist Peter Schiff recently took to X to blast the Trump administration for conceding the trade war without meaningful gains from China.

“How is this trade deal a win for Trump?” he asked. “China has agreed to nothing. The 145% tariffs we imposed have been reduced to 30%. The 125% tariffs they imposed in response have been reduced to 10%. If 145% tariffs were just a bargaining chip, China already called Trump’s bluff and won.”

He continued in response to comments, “So what have we won by agreeing to pause the war we started? We did not win a single battle in this war.”

Other economists echoed this view.

Moneywise: ‘This is a tragedy’: Mark Carney warns the 80-year period of US economic leadership ‘is over’ — says America is no longer the anchor of global trade. Here’s how to survive the ‘new reality’

Trump’s “Liberation Day” may be the first step in America’s exit from its role as the world’s economic anchor and trusted trade ally. That’s according to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who didn’t hold back in a press conference shortly after reciprocal tariffs on U.S. autos were announced.

“The system of global trade anchored on the United States … is over,” Carney said during the recent announcement. “The 80-year period when the United States embraced the mantle of global economic leadership … is over. While this is a tragedy, it is also the new reality.”

According to the BBC, world leaders, including EU Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, say the ongoing trade war will have “dire” consequences for millions of people across the world and undermine the global trading system.

The U.S. isn’t just the largest economy in the world, it’s also the largest consumer of goods and services.
