President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” has run into an unforeseen snag that has triggered a lawsuit.
The legislation, signed by Trump earlier this year, cuts over $1 trillion in Medicaid and food assistance programs, and phases out renewable energy and electric vehicle credits, while extending enormous tax cuts that go almost exclusively to wealthy voters. But one of the lesser-discussed changes this bill made was to impose a $100 annual fee on asylum seekers in the United States.
According to Politico, however, this was set up in such an unclear way that there isn’t even a way for asylum seekers to pay this fee, leading to a lawsuit against the administration.

Modesto Bee: Counterprotester arrested on suspicion of assault at No Kings rally in Modesto
One person was arrested on suspicion of assault during Saturday’s No Kings protest in Modesto.
Police said the incident occurred near McHenry and Briggsmore avenues after a protester reported being pushed by a counterprotester.
According to the Modesto Police Department, the Real-Time Crime Center helped identify the suspect, who was later found away from the protest area and taken into custody without incident. The individual was cited for misdemeanor assault.

Lindsey Halligan, Trump’s hand-picked prosecutor, reached out to a reporter about her coverage of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ indictment in what became a 33-hour exchange — and then insisted the conversation was “off the record.”
Last month, Trump tapped Halligan to serve as the interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia after her predecessor resigned and reportedly found insufficient evidence to criminally prosecute James. Overseen by Halligan, James was accused earlier this month of making false statements to a financial institution in connection with a loan for a property she purchased in 2020. She has denied any wrongdoing.
The New York Times then published an expose about James’ Norfolk, Virginia, home in question. Lawfare reporter Anna Bower tweeted screenshots of the article, which seemed to poke holes in the James indictment, and added her own commentary.
In an unusual move, Halligan reached out to Bower through the encrypted app Signal. Prosecutors rarely discuss ongoing cases. Still, the pair went back-and-forth and at the end, Halligan insisted everything was “off record.”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained a Texas father whose green card was revoked due to charges from when he was a teenager, his lawyers and wife told Newsweek.

Roman Surovtsev, now 41 years old, immigrated to the United States from the Soviet Union when he was 4 years old. When he was a teenager, his green card was revoked after he pleaded guilty to charges including carjacking and burglary, NPR reported.
But he was not deported after his prison sentence. Surovtsev is technically stateless, as neither Russia nor Ukraine, the two countries to which the U.S. government initially sought to deport him, has been able to prove him as a citizen, his lawyers Eric Lee and Christopher Godshall-Bennett told Newsweek.
“The Trump administration is trying to send him to a country where he will be drafted into the army and sent to front, where there is a very, very high likelihood of death,” Lee said. “This is somebody that has lived in the United States since he was a child. Yes, he’s made mistakes. He’s paid the price through the criminal process, but he has two young U.S. citizen daughters, a U.S. citizen wife He’s got a job and reformed himself. There’s absolutely no reason why he’s being detained.”
