LA Times: California is first state to sue Trump on tariffs

It’s Gov. Gavin Newsom’s most direct move against Trump since the president retook office.

Newsom’s lawsuit, announced Wednesday morning with California Attorney General Rob Bonta, is the first challenge from a U.S. state against Trump’s signature foreign policy cudgel.

California, the world’s fifth largest economy, stands to lose billions to tariffs with major state industries from Silicon Valley to agriculture heavily dependent on global trade.

“President Trump’s unlawful tariffs are wreaking chaos on California families, businesses, and our economy — driving up prices and threatening jobs,” Newsom said in a statement. “We’re standing up for American families who can’t afford to let the chaos continue.”

The lawsuit is Newsom’s most direct legal challenge to Trump’s agenda since the president retook office in January. The move instantly reignites California’s war with Trump and cements its place atop the resistance, after Newsom spent months appealing to the president for federal disaster relief.

It’s also notable as a unilateral challenge, underscoring the singular importance of the issue in California. Bonta has worked closely with other blue states on previous lawsuits challenging Trump’s immigration policies and federal funding cuts.

Meanwhile from Trump’s mindless sycophants:

“Instead of focusing on California’s rampant crime, homelessness, and unaffordability, Gavin Newsom is spending his time trying to block President Trump’s historic efforts to finally address the national emergency of our country’s persistent goods trade deficits,” White House spokesperson Kush Desai told POLITICO in a statement Wednesday.

LA Times: ‘I don’t trust America.’ Trump’s tariffs, detentions take a toll on local tourism

On Tuesday, a trickle of visitors traversed the sidewalks of star-studded Hollywood Boulevard, which is usually bustling this time of year with families and students on spring break trips. Parked open-air tour buses and vans were largely empty.

But Jose Ayon, manager at La La Land, a souvenir and gift shop, was not surprised. Foot traffic has struggled to rebound after the pandemic shutdowns and now global tariffs imposed by the Trump administration could make matters worse.

Among the casualties in the ongoing trade hostilities is tourism. Amid news of visa cancellations and deportations, state and local tourism officials are increasingly worried about the potential adverse effects on travel to Los Angeles and California.

“The way we are perceived globally, is we are blowing up not just our economy but everyone else’s economy,” Filla said. “People don’t think it’s good, they don’t think it’s fair, so why would they go to America?”

Mediaite: The Wall Street Journal Torches Trump for ‘Hurting His Own Cause and Country’ Instead of China: ‘Making It Up as He Goes’

The Wall Street Journal continued its assault on President Donald Trump’s trade policy in a new editorial questioning if he even has a “China trade strategy.”

“It’s all going according to plan, says the White House, and you almost have to smile at this spin in trying to sell President Trump’s partial tariff reversal this week as a triumph,” began the Journal in its opening salvo. “The reality is that Mr. Trump is making it up as he goes, and it would help if he had an actual strategy to deal with China in particular.”

After noting that Trump has escalated his trade war with China, it went on to submit that it isn’t clear whether the administration seeks “complete decoupling” or a “trade deal” with the Chinese.

Mediaite: Marjorie Taylor Greene Scooped Up Tanking Stocks — and Made a Profit After Tariff Pause: Report

Trumps cronies are racking in the bucks — illegal insider trading?

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) reportedly made a series of bold stock buys last week — right as the markets cratered under President Donald Trump’s tariff threats.

Greene, a vocal MAGA diehard, pounced on some of the market’s worst-hit companies, according to a newly filed financial disclosure seen by CBS News. Among her targets: Dell, Amazon, Lululemon, and RH (formerly Restoration Hardware) — all of which were down nearly 40% when she bought in.

It’s unclear how much Greene spent, since the required three-page report only offers ranges. But the timing is “working out so far” according to CBS News.

Hours before easing the tariffs, Trump told his supporters on Truth Social, “THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!”

There is no evidence Greene traded on nonpublic information, which would constitute insider trading. However, the timing of Trump’s tariff announcement — paired with his recurring calls for supporters to “buy the dip” — has sparked criticism from opposition lawmakers.

UK Independent: Fund managers quietly fear Trump doesn’t have a tariff plan and that he ‘might be insane’

Some fund managers concerned ‘that the White House is not acting rationally, but rather on ideology. And some even fear that this may not even be ideology’

As President Donald Trump’s back-and-forth on trade policies creates chaos in the financial markets, some fund managers are questioning the rationality of his decisions.

“In the last few days, we have had many conversations with macro fund managers,” Tom Lee, the head of research at the financial analysis firm FSInsights, wrote on Wednesday morning, before Trump backed down from most of his tariffs on U.S. trading partners.

“And their concern is that the White House is not acting rationally, but rather on ideology. And some even fear that this may not even be ideology,” he added. “A few have quietly wondered if the President might be insane.”

Insane? Ideological? Or simply suffering a severe case of dementia?

You decide!

New York Times: Inside Trump’s Plan to ‘Get’ Greenland: Persuasion, Not Invasion

The island’s population might not be easily convinced as the president tries to clinch one of history’s greatest real estate deals.

Mr. Trump’s advisers have already begun making their public case, arguing that Denmark has been a poor custodian of the island, that only the United States can protect it from encroachment by Russia and China, and that America will help Greenlanders “get rich,” as Mr. Trump has put it.

Given how King Donald has trashed our own economy the past 2.5 months, Greenlanders would be nuts to wish the same upon themselves.

The Trump administration is also studying financial incentives for Greenlanders, including the possibility of replacing the $600 million in subsidies that Denmark gives the island with an annual payment of about $10,000 per Greenlander.

Denmark provides them with a comprehensive health care system. Why would they trust the bozo who plans to destroy Medicaid?

Some Trump officials believe those costs could be offset by new revenue from the extraction of Greenland’s natural resources, which include rare earth minerals, copper, gold, uranium and oil.

Trump officials argue that American capital and industrial might can gain access to the island’s largely untapped mineral wealth in a way that Denmark cannot. “This is about critical minerals,” Mr. Trump’s national security adviser, Michael Waltz, told Fox News in January. “This is about natural resources.”

Those natural resource belong to the people of Greenland, not to Trump and his billionaire cronies. Only the people of Greenland can decide their future and how to share the wealth, if they even choose to share it.

Trump is drooling over a land that isn’t his and never will be.

US Mirror: Critics call for Donald Trump to be ‘impeached’ as he makes awkward tariff blunder

Critics have declared US president Donald Trump should be ‘impeached for stupidity’ following an awkward tariff blunder. Meanwhile, Elon Musk looks ‘rattled’ as he’s brutally trolled during gaming livestream from his private jet.

They’re both stupid. ‘Nuff said!

Trump spoke at the National Republican Congressional Committee’s (NRCC) annual fundraising dinner in Washington on Tuesday (April 8) where he commented on the 104% levy imposed on goods from China. The president said the US had been “ripped […] off left and right” by other countries for long enough, declaring: “Now it’s our turn to do the ripping.”

The people being ripped the most are those with retirement accounts and those dependent on Social Security and Medicaid.

But social media users were quick to point out the additional cost incurred by the tariff on Chinese imports were likely to be paid by American consumers. Ed Krassenstein, creator and co-host of the podcast KrassenCast, wrote on X: “Wrong Mr. Trump.

“China isn’t paying a 104% Tariff. Americans are paying it. If you still think China is paying it then you should be impeached for stupidity.”

US Mirror: Major EU nation turns to China as new plan with Beijing emerging to counter Trump tariffs

Who needs the U.S.? If push comes to shove, the rest of the world will just pass us by.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made his way to Asia for a diplomatic trip in a recent push considering options away from the United States after President Donald Trump’s tariffs on the European Union went into effect.

Sánchez landed in Hanoi, Vietnam on Wednesday, where he will meet To Lam. On Thursday, he will meet top business leaders to replenish commercial ties between Vietnam and Spain.

Sánchez is then scheduled to head over to China on Friday to meet President Xi Jinping and other Chinese investors, marking his third visit in two years.

Sánchez is the first EU leader to strengthen ties with China in a move that could encourage the rest of Europe to follow suit.

GB News: Peter Hitchens says Donald Trump ‘not a wholly rational and responsible person anymore’ after dramatic tariff U-turn

President Trump is no longer a “wholly rational and responsible person”, political commentator Peter Hitchens has said on GB News.

“I think the moment is surely coming when anybody interested in rational politics limited to the true possibilities of what will actually work should start to wonder if the person occupying the Oval Office is fit to do so.

“It’s immensely worrying if he’s doing this and he has the power to do so. This doesn’t seem the work of a wholly rational and responsible person.

“Conservatives who make excuses for Trump because he sometimes does things they like should stop doing so.”
