The Daily Yonder: ICE Returns to Intimidation Tactics from the First Trump Term

Immigration agents target community organizers involved in protecting the rights of farm workers. Activists say the tactics are meant to undermine the trust of migrants in organizations trying to help them.

Early one late March morning, Farmworker activist and union leader Alfredo Juarez Zeferino was taking his partner to her job on a tulip farm in the picturesque Skagit Valley, Washington, when the couple was stopped by immigration enforcement.

According to reporting in The Stranger, Zeferino called Rosalinda Guillen, a long-time organizer and founder of Community to Community (C2C), at 7:23 am on March 25, 2025. In the background, she could hear Zeferino’s partner crying as Zeferino told ICE officers to leave her alone, before the chaotic phone call abruptly ended.

Zeferino was arrested that day and has remained in a detention facility in Tacoma, Washington, despite the efforts of activists and legal aid.

At 25, Zeferino is already an accomplished organizer; he was a founding member of local farmworker union Familias Unidas por la Justicia, won a Peacemaker Award from the Whatcom Peace & Justice Commission, and sat on the now-defunct Bellingham Immigration Advisory Board.

Zeferino’s detention seems to be a part of a pattern of targeted immigration enforcement against immigration labor movement leaders. Fabiola Ortiz Valdez, the director of organizing for the Food Chain Workers Alliance, an organization that connects immigrant labor organizers across the US and Canada, has seen an increase in immigration and labor activist detentions by immigration officials.

“We have seen ICE and immigration enforcement targeting workers; we also see harsher targeting for organizers as well,” Ortiz Valdez said, adding “I think that our members and organizations understand that the immigration laws in this country have always meant to do what they’re doing right now, which is create a more exploitable workforce within the United States. So it’s not surprising, but it’s definitely very alarming.”

Migrant Justice filed a lawsuit in 2018 to stop the targeting. In 2020, they settled successfully with ICE, which dropped their deportation cases against the plaintiffs, paid restitution, and committed to not targeting Migrant Justice and its membership in the future.

But apparently they are still doing exactly that!

Daily Mail: Democrat Mayor of Nashville under investigation for helping illegal migrants evade ICE

When asked about what specifically he was accusing the mayor of doing, the congressman told reporters, ‘Well that’s why we’re going to have an investigation,’ but failed to name any crimes.

The Democrat has denied any wrong doing while pushing support for the Belonging Fund.

‘The Belonging Fund supports families known to be impacted as a result of activities related to immigration, but the entire point is family supports, cost of living, those kinds of things,’ O’Connell told the local outlet.

‘It’s not even intended to be about legal services, so it is about people who have identified food insecurity as a result of possibly losing somebody who was an earner in the household, it is about childcare, it is about basic family needs.’

AsAmNews: Green card holders face extra scrutiny and detention at airports

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol is warning travelers this summer holding green cards that they could face detention when traveling through airports.

There’s been much concern following reports that ICE agents have detained individuals returning to the U.S. from the Philippines.

“As part of CBP’s national security mission, officers routinely determine the admissibility of foreign nationals using longstanding U.S. immigration law,” CBP said in a statement to the Inquirer. “Lawful permanent residents convicted of offenses considered to be crimes involving moral turpitude, including aggravated felonies, can legally lose their status and be removed. Crimes involving moral turpitude include offenses such as grand theft and the use or distribution of controlled substances.”

A Homeland Security commercial running on both radio and TV features Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem proclaiming that under President Trump, the United States has been made safer as murderers and rapists are being deported.

However, its apparent nonviolent offenders are also being caught into this dragnet despite their legal immigration status. Protesters deemed acting against the interest of the Trump administration’s U.S. policy are also being deported.

Miami Herald: ‘Evil is Powerless’: ICE Official Announces More Arrests

The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a targeted operation focusing on “egregious criminal alien offenders.” The operation is part of the “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful” program, aiming to improve public safety through enforcement actions. President Donald Trump’s administration emphasized its commitment to reducing crime in the capital, and the latest efforts saw the arrests of 189 undocumented immigrants in Washington, D.C.

Director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Washington, D.C. Russell Hott stated that the operation targeted high-crime areas. The action resulted in arrests of individuals allegedly connected to violent criminal organizations, including MS-13 and the 18th Street gang.

And again I have to ask, “How many of these 189 “criminals” were guilty of anything worse than a traffic violation? And how many were actually convicted in a court of law? ICE is all about numbers, not quality or accuracy.

Irish Star: US citizen detained by immigration officials who thought Real ID was a fake

Immigration officials detained a US citizen during a raid on a construction site, as video footage showed numerous officers rushing to handcuff the man while others shouted in his defense

A US citizen was detained during an ICE raid at a construction site and claims he was ‘tackled’ and ‘handcuffed, hard,’ as police accused his REAL ID of being a fake.

Leonardo García Venegas, 25, was detained at the Foley, Alabama, site where he was working as ICE agents raided the place. A video of the incident aired by Telemundo showed the scene as authorities on the site had García Venegas bent over while multiple officers rushed over to put handcuffs on him, and someone yelled in the background, ‘he’s a citizen!’

Garcia was kept in a vehicle until officers released him. He says he took out his wallet and ID and showed them his REAL ID.

“They took out my wallet, took out my ID,” he said in an interview. “And they told me it was fake. Said it wasn’t valid and that it was fake. My ID. They handcuffed me, and they handcuffed me really tight.”

“Very hard.”

“Apparently, a REAL ID is not valid anymore. He has a REAL ID,” his cousin Shelah Venegas said.

García Venegas was born in Florida to Mexican parents and is a US citizen.

“We all made sure we have the REAL ID and went through the protocols the administration is asking for….. He has his REAL ID, and then they see him, and I guess because his English isn’t fluent and/or because he’s brown, it’s fake, it’s not real.”

The arrest left Venegas shaken, but mostly afraid for his brother, who is in the country illegally and was arrested and detained.

Venegas says he wants to sue but was told by lawyers that prosecuting a federal agent would be nearly impossible.

Pigs just gotta be pigs. ICE will be reformed only from top down, by rolling heads. Once enough people are fed up with their Gestapo behavior, it will happen.

Raleigh News & Observer: More Than 400 ICE Arrests in Border State

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested over 400 illegal immigrants in Houston during a weeklong operation. Among those arrested, more than 260 had prior criminal records. ICE is reportedly using a “hub and spoke” system to speed up removals, allowing for deportation within 24 to 72 hours of arrest.

How many of these 400 have any violations worse than a parking ticket, if even that much? ICE is just doing whatever they can to get their numbers up, regardless of the human cost. They have zero credibility at this point.

Fox News: ‘Flood the system’: US attorney unleashes new task force to crack down on blue state’s sanctuary policies

New task force filing up to 50 warrants weekly to get more illegal immigrants into federal custody

United States Attorney for the District of California Bill Essayli is taking major action to crack down on “sanctuary” policies in the Golden State.

He’s launching “Operation Guardian Angel,” which is a task force, made up of assets from ICE, HSI, DEA, FBI, ATF, and Border Patrol, to begin scanning a criminal database every single day to identify arrested illegal aliens in local jurisdictions that DOJ can charge with felony illegal-reentry.

“They’ve made it almost impossible for ICE to do their job, issue detainers and get criminal illegal immigrants out of jails. So what we’re doing instead is we’re going to start issuing warrants,” he told Fox News.

Which is bullshit!

The Tenth Amendment says that the states can’t be forced to do the Fed’s work for them. If the Feds want to bust illegal immigrants in sanctuary cities, they’ll have to do their own leg work.

That still doesn’t be they’ll be welcomed with open arms on the streets. Good luck with that!

Knewz: Trump DHS Threatens AOC With Arrest

[DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia] McLaughlin warned Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) would also face arrest if she took similar unauthorized actions. An investigation into assaults on ICE agents is underway. McLaughlin said, “If she trespasses and if she assaults law enforcement officers, as we saw earlier, I think that’s certainly on the table. As far as we’ve heard, a lot of Democrats make the argument that they’re just conducting oversight, congressional oversight.”

Just lots of huffing & puffing & theatrics from one of King Donald’s unqualified bimbos for a hypothetical problem that hasn’t happened and likely never will.

Stock futures fall after Moody’s strips U.S. of its top credit rating

Last of major ratings firms strips top rating more than 13 years after S&P was first to downgrade U.S. from triple-A

Just when the stock market had clawed back all the losses sparked by the panic over President Donald Trump’s tariff plans, investors face another round of debt-related angst as markets slid Sunday after Moody’s Ratings stripped the U.S. government of its last triple-A credit rating.

Strategists warned the move, announced after the market close on Friday, could spark some near-term selling in stocks and Treasurys.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell more than 250 points, or 0.6%, by Sunday evening. S&P 500 futures also dropped 0.6% while Nasdaq-100 futures sank 0.7%. The ICE U.S. Dollar Index, a gauge of the dollar’s value relative to major rivals like the euro, was down 0.4%.

Latin Times: Undocumented Florida Woman Fined $1.82 Million by ICE for 20-Year Overstay

An undocumented Honduran woman living in Florida has been fined over $1.82 million by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for failing to depart the country following a 2005 removal order.

The fine, issued in a May 9 notice by ICE’s civil fines department, charged the woman $500 for each day she remained in the United States since the order was issued, totaling $1,821,350. The woman, a mother of three U.S.-born children, is being represented by immigration attorney Michelle Sanchez, who said this is the first time she has seen such a high civil penalty imposed.

“This is ICE terrorizing individuals without even having to go pick them up,” Sanchez told CBS News. “They are terrorizing them by sending these notices where they are fining individuals an exorbitant amount of money that a person sometimes doesn’t even make that amount in their lifetime.”
