Raleigh News & Observer: ‘Not Surprising’: Judge Responds to Trump Admin’s Firing

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has reportedly dismissed New York Administrative Judge Karen Ortiz after she challenged White House guidance on defining sex and criticized the agency’s delays in transgender discrimination cases. Her firing has sparked controversy over the EEOC’s approach to LGBTQIA+ issues. The incident comes amid rising tensions between free speech and federal policy enforcement.

Administrative law judges should work under the supervision of the circuit courts and not be subjected to the whims of political appointee. As it is, Trump is turning administrative law judges into biased political hacks.

EEOC Chief Administrative Judge Regina Stephens called Ortiz’s public criticism unprofessional and damaging to the agency’s reputation. Ortiz maintained she was fulfilling her duty by highlighting EEOC mistreatment of LGBTQIA+ complainants.

Ortiz is challenging her firing, alleging a hostile environment for LGBTQIA+ workers and a departure from the EEOC’s civil rights mission. She plans to continue civil rights advocacy and volunteer work.

Ortiz stated, “The news of my termination is very sad, although not surprising.” She added, “I think the agency has now become something that, I don’t know if I’d even really want to work there anymore. They’ve lost their way.”

Ortiz added, “It takes courage to take a stand, and be willing to be fired, and lose a six-figure job, and health insurance, and the prestige of the title of ‘judge,’ but I think it’ll also serve an example to future lawyers and young lawyers out there that a job title isn’t everything, and it’s more important to stay true to your values.”

Raleigh News and Observer: Eighteen States Join Lawsuit Against ICE Operations

Los Angeles has filed a class-action lawsuit against the Trump administration, accusing ICE of using unlawful tactics including racial profiling and excessive force. The lawsuit highlights how the deployment of armed agents, particularly at MacArthur Park, has created a climate of fear and intimidation within the community. City officials argued the actions violate residents’ rights and have demanded accountability for the enforcement practices.

Mayor Karen Bass said, “I got alerted that there was an ICE operation, military intervention — who knows — at MacArthur Park.

City Attorney Hydee Feldstein-Soto expressed concern that armed agents and military vehicles are frightening residents.

Legal reps allege ICE and CBP have conducted unconstitutional stops and detentions based on race and ethnicity.

Soto said, “The federal government has concentrated thousands of armed immigration agents, many of whom lack visible identification, and military troops in our communities, conducting unconstitutional raids, roundups and anonymous detentions, sowing fear and chaos among our residents.”

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, joined by 17 other states, filed an amicus brief supporting the lawsuit and urging an end to the enforcement actions.

Raleigh News & Observer: Trump’s Approval Rating Plummets in New Poll

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 38%, according to Quinnipiac, amid a public clash with Elon Musk over the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” A CBS/YouGov poll earlier this month showed 45% approval and 55% disapproval, underscoring the growing public scrutiny he faces.

Republican lawmakers … are viewed unfavorably by 61% of the general public. This disparity comes amid ongoing challenges Republicans have faced in appealing to a wider audience beyond their base.

Raleigh News & Observer: Judge Invokes ‘King George’ in Blow to Trump

A federal judge has questioned President Donald Trump’s legal grounds for deploying 4,000 National Guard troops in Los Angeles amid Gov. Gavin Newsom’s lawsuit. California won the lawsuit, but an appeals court blocked the removal of troops. The judge expressed skepticism of Trump’s claim that unrest in the city justified the federalization. U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer noted key legal issues surrounding the deployment.

Prior to the appeals court temporary block, Breyer said, “That’s the difference between a Constitutional government and King George. It’s not that a leader can simply say something and it becomes it.”

Newsom wrote, “The court just confirmed what we all know — the military belongs on the battlefield, not on our city streets.”

Raleigh News & Observer: Another University Faces Investigation for Defying Trump

The U.S. Department of Education is investigating Western Carolina University for allegedly violating Title IX and not complying with the Trump administration’s executive order on transgender women. The Office for Civil Rights claims the university has not ensured sex-separated facilities within federally funded institutions. Allegations include a female student being investigated for asking a male student to leave a women’s bathroom and cases of transgender female students being assigned to girls’ dormitories.

Western Carolina University stated it complied with all state and federal regulations and asserted it will adjust campus policies as necessary. Reports indicated violations related to ensuring sex-separated intimate spaces.

An investigation was opened after former student Payton McNabb filmed a male student in a women’s bathroom. McNabb noted that such policies violate individual rights and negatively impact female students seeking single-sex spaces.

So the investigation is based on the whining of a FORMER student., not on current conditions at the school.

Raleigh News & Observer: More Than 400 ICE Arrests in Border State

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested over 400 illegal immigrants in Houston during a weeklong operation. Among those arrested, more than 260 had prior criminal records. ICE is reportedly using a “hub and spoke” system to speed up removals, allowing for deportation within 24 to 72 hours of arrest.

How many of these 400 have any violations worse than a parking ticket, if even that much? ICE is just doing whatever they can to get their numbers up, regardless of the human cost. They have zero credibility at this point.

Raleigh News & Observer: ‘I am Ashamed’: West Point Professor Resigns in Defiance

United States Military Academy at West Point philosophy professor Graham Parsons has resigned after 13 years, citing significant changes in the academy’s educational principles. He no longer aligns himself with the institution, claiming it has strayed from its foundational values and limits academic freedom. Parsons expressed concern regarding recent policies that have altered curriculum by eliminating courses and modifying syllabuses to fit specific ideological viewpoints.

Parson claimed the changes have made it impossible for him to fulfill his responsibilities as an educator, leading to his decision to resign at the semester’s end. Parsons said, “I cannot tolerate these changes, which prevent me from doing my job responsibly. I am ashamed to be associated with the academy in its current form.”

Parsons added, “In a matter of days, the United States Military Academy at West Point abandoned its core principles. Once a school that strove to give cadets the broad-based, critical-minded, nonpartisan education they need for careers as Army officers, it was suddenly eliminating courses, modifying syllabuses and censoring arguments to comport with the ideological tastes of the Trump administration.”

Raleigh News & Observer: Trump Suffers Blow as Judge Rebukes ‘Invasion’ Claim

U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez, Jr. recently ruled that President Donald Trump’s invocation of the Alien Enemies Act (AEA) to detain and deport Venezuelan immigrants is unlawful. Rodriguez determined that the government’s actions exceed the statute’s scope and contradict its plain meaning. The ruling is the first to state that the AEA cannot apply to alleged gang members.

Raleigh News & Observer: ‘Nullified’: Trump Suffers Blow in Court

A U.S. federal appeals court has temporarily blocked former President Donald Trump’s effort to end benefits from the humanitarian parole program (CHNV) for over 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. The First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston ruled that the administration did not meet the criteria for an emergency intervention to overturn a prior lower court ruling. Federal Judge Indira Talwani previously halted the cancellation of the CHNV ordered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Trump has since pushed for the Supreme Court to grant him the ability to put an end to the program.

The DHS under Trump has alleged that the CHNV program was misused. Critics argued that its cancellation violates the Immigration and Nationality Act, resulting in detrimental effects for migrants who relied on the established program.

Talwani found that the DHS’s measure did not comply with legal requirements for case-by-case reviews and ordered the reinstatement of the parole process and its associated immigration benefits. Her ruling mandated that notifications sent to individuals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela remain suspended pending further judicial orders.

Raleigh News & Observer: Dershowitz Predicts Supreme Court Will Reject Trump Plan

President Donald Trump recently pushed for the deportation of American-born criminals and expansion of detention facilities in El Salvador. The administration has already deported over 200 migrants to El Salvador. Attorney Alan Dershowitz said the Supreme Court will likely block efforts to transfer American inmates to foreign prisons with abusive conditions.
