President Donald Trump ordered U.S. Marines and National Guard troops to Los Angeles during immigration protests, labeling the city a “trash heap.” He claimed the military is needed to prevent violence. Critics have voiced concern over projected deployment costs of approximately $134 million.

Critics, like Tad Weber of The Fresno Bee, criticized Trump’s characterization of the city. Reflecting on a visit, Weber writes, “Far from a ‘trash heap,’ Los Angeles was as vibrant and busy as ever.” Weber added, “By characterizing Los Angeles as a “trash heap,” Trump violated Rule No. 1 for the president: Be America’s cheerleader. The president should extol, not denigrate, our nation’s cities.”

Federal agents in Los Angeles have reportedly apprehended over 2,300 individuals in early June at their workplaces, resulting in rapid deportations. The operation has sparked significant unrest and protests, as critics have expressed outrage regarding immigrant rights. One detained individual’s parents claimed their son had no legal representation and that their son had no criminal record.

Advocates have argued the raids contradict federal claims of targeting offenders. They claimed that over 200 detainees have no documented offenses.

Protests have intensified over ICE raids and tactics. Critics claimed the administration has shifted from targeting criminals to broad deportation.

To claim that they are deporting criminals is a farce. At this point it’s all about number — they’ll deport anyone they can get their hands on.

Jesús Molina-Veya was discovered unresponsive in his cell [with a ligature around his neck] on June 7 and died shortly after being taken to a local hospital

Mexico is pursuing legal options after a Mexican citizen died earlier this month while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia. According to Mexican media reports, ICE is now preventing officials from the Mexican Consulate in Atlanta from entering the facility to speak with other detainees.

On June 7, 45-year-old Jesús Molina-Veya was found unconscious in his cell with a ligature around his neck, according to ICE. Despite CPR efforts, medical staff transferred him to Phoebe Sumter Hospital in Americus, where he was pronounced dead later that evening.

As the investigation into his death continues, Proceso reports that Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) has raised concerns that consular staff were “not notified for interviews” during recent visits to the ICE facility and has requested an explanation from officials at the detention center.

Molina-Veya’s death marks the second time a Mexican national has died while in ICE custody at the Stewart Detention Center, a facility that has recently come under scrutiny for poor living conditions, reports of abuse and allegations of medical negligence.

Just last month, another Mexican national, Abelardo Avellaneda-Delgado, died while being transferred to the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin.

Trump’s proposed 5% tax on remittances was lowered to just 3.5% by the Senate, Sheinbaum said

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the U.S. lowered its proposed tax on remittances from 5% to 3.5%, but that officials will continue working to lower it further.

During her daily press conference on Thursday, Sheinbaum welcomed a move by U.S. lawmakers to reduce the proposed tax rate to 3.5%, but said she would keep pushing for its full elimination. She argued that the tax would harm not just Mexico, but many countries in the region and beyond.

The tax is a total disgrace. It mostly will hurt poor poeple / lower income earners in the U.S. who are trying to help even poorer members of their families overseas. This tax will be paid on top of the income and social security taxes that have already been paid on the amounts being remitted.

King Donald is threatening drone strikes inside Mexico:

Amid ongoing threats from President Donald Trump to use drone strikes against drug cartels, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated her opposition to any military action inside her country. 

“We do not agree with any kind of intervention or interference,” Sheinbaum told reporters Tuesday at her daily morning news conference. “This has been very clear: We coordinate, we collaborate, [but] we are not subordinate and there is no meddling in these actions.”

The president’s comments come as reports are growing that the Trump administration is considering carrying out military strikes on cartel targets. Reports suggest the administration is prepared to act unilaterally if Washington cannot secure Mexican support.

CNN: Old US-Canada relationship is ‘over,’ warns Canadian prime minister

Canada will have to “dramatically reduce” its reliance on the United States as the two countries’ relationship darkens, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned on Thursday, adding that the old bilateral relationship was “over.”

After holding a cabinet meeting to discuss Canada’s response to US President Donald Trump’s tariffs threats, Carney told reporters in Ottawa that he foresaw the coming of a “fundamentally different relationship” between the two countries.

“The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over,” he said.

“It’s clear the US is no longer a reliable partner. It is possible that with comprehensive negotiations, we could reestablish an element of confidence but there will be no going backwards …

In other words, King Donald, go screw yourself. We’re not playing charades with you any longer.
