SFGate: From San Diego to the Bay Area, California restaurants are on edge over immigration raids

Brandon Mejia usually spends his weekends conducting a symphony of vendors serving pupusas, huaraches and an array of tacos at his two weekly 909Tacolandia pop-up events.

But in the past week, that’s all come to a screeching halt. As the Trump administration ramps up immigration raids in California, some restaurants, worried about their workers or finding that customers are staying home more, are closing temporarily. Many street vendors are going into hiding, and some food festivals and farmers markets have been canceled.

Mejia called off all Tacolandia events last week. His mind raced about whether agents would come for his vendors as videos surfaced on social media of taqueros, farm workers and fruit vendors vanishing in immigration raids around LA and neighboring Ventura County.

“A lot of these vendors, their goal is to have restaurants. They want to follow the rules,” said Mejia, who was born and raised in San Bernardino in a family from Mexico City. But after conferring with vendors, they decided the risk was too high: “Some people have told me that their relatives have got taken, so I don’t want to be responsible for that.”

After a week of mass protests and more raids at farms, grocery stores and at least one swap meet, Mejia and many others remain on edge. Mejia said some small food businesses are getting desperate, trying to decide whether to risk reopening or stay closed while their own families grow hungry.

Mediaite: ‘MAGA HATES FoxNews’: Trump Lashes Out at Murdoch Media Empire in Truth Social Tirade

President Donald Trump lashed out at Rupert Murdoch’s conservative media empire in a Thursday morning Truth Social tirade that saw him declare that “MAGA HATES FoxNews.”

“The Crooked FoxNews Polls got the Election WRONG, I won by much more than they said I would, and have been biased against me for years. They are always wrong and negative. It’s why MAGA HATES FoxNews, even though their anchors are GREAT,” began Trump in his first post on the subject.

“This has gone on for years, but they never change the incompetent polling company that does their work. Now a new FoxNews poll comes out this morning giving me a little more than 50% at the Border, and yet the Border is miraculously perfect, NOBODY WAS ABLE TO COME IN LAST MONTH. 60,000 people came in with Sleepy Joe in the same month last year,” he continued. “I hate FAKE pollsters, one of the Worst, but Fox will never change their discredited pollster!”

Then in a follow-up post, the president fired a shot at Murdoch’s flagship newspaper, The Wall Street Journal.

“The Wall Street Journal has No Idea what my thoughts are concerning Iran!” he wrote. The Journal has reported that Trump has approved American plans to attack Iran, but is holding out to give the final go-ahead in a last ditch hope that the Iranians would willingly give up their nuclear program.

King Donald hates anyone who doesn’t inflate his ego sufficiently.

Associated Press: ICE takes custody of Spanish-language journalist arrested at Georgia protest

U.S. immigration authorities said Wednesday they have detained a Spanish-language journalist, who will face deportation proceedings following his arrest on charges of obstructing police and unlawful assembly while covering a weekend protest outside Atlanta.

Mario Guevara was turned over by police to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody three days after he was jailed in DeKalb County, agency spokesman Lindsay Williams said in an emailed statement. His case now goes to immigration court to determine whether Guevara, a native of El Salvador, can remain in the U.S.

His attorney, Giovanni Diaz, has said that Guevara was doing his job and committed no crime when police arrested him. He also says Guevara has legal authorization to live and work in the U.S., and has a pending application for permanent residency. Diaz did not immediately return phone and email messages Wednesday.

Daily Beast: DOJ Seeks Lifetime Behind Bars for Jan. 6 Convict Pardoned By Trump

The Tennessee man was convicted of conspiring to murder FBI agents and other officials. He claims his pardon for his crimes on Jan. 6, 2021, should also apply to that conviction.

Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to sentence a Jan. 6 rioter to a lifetime behind bars—despite President Donald Trump pardoning his crimes at the U.S. Capitol.

Edward Kelley, a 35-year-old East Tennessee native, was convicted in November of conspiring to murder FBI agents and other officials who investigated his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.

Kelley was separately convicted of throwing a Capitol cop to the ground, with the help of others, and smashing a window with a piece of wood. However, those charges were wiped away by the president’s sweeping pardon of so-called “Jan. 6ers” in January.

Kelley has contested that Trump’s pardon of his Capitol crimes should also apply to his conviction for plotting to kill FBI agents and local law enforcement in Tennessee.

The Department of Justice disagrees. In a sentencing memorandum filed Tuesday, and first reported by Politico, they asked a judge to send Kelley to prison for the rest of his life.

“Kelley created a list of specific people he intended to assassinate, including agents, officers, and employees of the FBI, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Maryville Police Department, Blount County Sheriff’s Office, and Clinton Police Department,” the memorandum read. “To effectuate his plan, Kelley sought the assistance of others to identify his victims’ pattern of life and to murder them at their offices, homes, and in public places.”

Part of his alleged plan was to attack his local FBI office in Knoxville by using “improvised explosive devices attached to vehicles and drones.”

Apparently some scumbags are too scummy even for a low-life like Trump.

Raw Story: ‘Is he confused?’ Gavin Newsom schools Trump on what his troops actually do

President Donald Trump complained Wednesday that California can’t be trusted with forest fire management — and then Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) reminded him that the people in charge of that were called away on Trump’s orders.

Trump made the comments in response to questions about whether the standoff between himself and Newsom over mass deportations could affect federal wildfire relief for the state.

“Sure, maybe,” said Trump. “The man’s incompetent. You clean the floor of your forest, and you won’t have any forest fires.”

“Clean the floor of the forest”? LOL! Should he wash the forest windows, too?

The president has made similar comments many times, at one point during his first term drawing widespread mockery and a rebuke from the Finnish government for claiming California needs to “rake” its forests to stop fires, like they supposedly do in Finland.

“You pulled National Guard from my command — who were literally doing this work — to stand around in front of a building in LA,” wrote Newsom. “Does the President of the United States not understand what his troops do? Is he confused again? Deeply disturbing.”

Raw Story: ‘Lightning fast’: House lawmakers get a stern directive from Trump

President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Wednesday to demand that the House immediately act on a new package of cryptocurrency laws passed by the Senate.

“The Senate just passed an incredible Bill that is going to make America the UNDISPUTED Leader in Digital Assets — Nobody will do it better, it is pure GENIUS!” wrote Trump. “Digital Assets are the future, and our Nation is going to own it. We are talking about MASSIVE Investment, and Big Innovation. The House will hopefully move LIGHTNING FAST, and pass a ‘clean’ GENIUS Act.”

“Get it to my desk, ASAP — NO DELAYS, NO ADD ONS,” Trump added. “This is American Brilliance at its best, and we are going to show the World how to WIN with Digital Assets like never before!”

The GENIUS Act is the first legislation aimed at regulating so-called stablecoins, a form of cryptocurrency intended to remain stable in price as opposed to typical coins that can fluctuate wildly in value.

However, its passage in the Senate was fraught, as Democrats initially blocked the bill over a variety of concerns, including a lack of consumer protections, the potential domination of the space by tech companies, and the fact that the bill had a loophole that could be exploited by the Trump family to continue profiting off crypto ventures personally, a massive potential conflict of interest.

“A loophole that could be exploited by the Trump family”? A loophole for our Grifter-in-Chief? I’m shocked! Not!

Critics of the bill still fear it would be a giveaway to Trump ….

The king wants his due!

LA Times: Will employers be targeted for hiring undocumented workers?

Federal authorities have arrested hundreds of potentially undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles this month, targeting day laborers at a Home Depot, factory workers at a downtown apparel company and cleaners at car washes across the city.

But the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents aren’t going after the business owners who may have illegally hired these workers.

President Trump’s crackdown on immigration has spared small and large U.S. employers that rely on thousands of undocumented employees, even though hiring undocumented workers can be a criminal offense.

“There are some instances of criminal prosecutions of people for knowingly hiring unauthorized workers, but it is extremely rare,” said Ahilan Arulanantham, co-director of the Center for Immigration Law and Policy at the UCLA School of Law. “There’s not an appetite for that kind of enforcement.”

Instead, the recent raids have affected rank and file workers, most of whom were detained suddenly and face deportation.

federal program called E-Verify makes it easy for employers to validate the status of potential hires and ensure they aren’t unknowingly employing someone without proper authorization. But the program is widely underused, especially in California, where only about 16% of employers are enrolled.

Participation in the program is voluntary for everyone except federal contractors and other businesses that receive money from the government, Reisz said. The program is largely ignored because many companies are dependent on undocumented laborers and don’t want to be forced to reject their services.

Employers told The Times last year that requiring the use of E-Verify would devastate their businesses, unless other overhauls to immigration policy allowed them access to more workers.

Raw Story: ‘Be a man’: Senator shouts at Pete Hegseth as he refuses to answer questions

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth clashed with Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) during a Wednesday hearing over the 2026 budget requests. Ultimately, it devolved into Hegseth laughing at the senator before she elevated her voice.

Slotkin recalled during Hegseth’s confirmation hearing that she asked whether he would agree to deploy American soldiers to fire on protesters. At the time, Hegseth called it “hypothetical,” despite former Secretary Mark Esper being asked to do the same thing. Hegseth has since deployed the National Guard and Marines to oppose protesters.

“Does the uniformed military have the ability to arrest and detain protesters?” asked Slotkin.

Hegseth fumbled.

“It’s a yes or no thing,” she said.

“It’s bemusing the extent to which the speculation is out there. These troops are given very clear orders,” Hegseth claimed.

“Then what is the order? Then list it out for us. Be a man. List it out!” she asked. “Did you authorize them to detain or arrest. That is a fundamental of democracy. I’m not trying to be a snot here. I’m just trying to get the actual — did you authorize them to do that?”

“All of these orders and what they are sent to do are public,” said Hegseth.

“Ok, so say it, say it. Yes or no,” she said.

“I’d like to,” he said.

“Please. Yes or no,” she repeated.

“I’ve said time and time again, through interruption, they are there to protect law enforcement,” Hegseth continued, still refusing to answer her question.

“Do they have the ability to arrest —” Slotkin began with Hegseth talking over her.

“To do their job deporting illegals allowed in by the previous administration,” Hegseth continued.

“So, they cannot arrest and detain citizens of the United States? The uniformed military, is that right?” she said.

“As we stated, if necessary, in their own self-defense, they can temporarily detain and hand over to ICE, but there’s no arresting going on, and you know this better than — you’re trying to play political games,” Hegseth glared.

Slotkin is likely asking the question due to reports that U.S. Marines detained a man outside of a federal building, the Military Times reported. The man did not hear their commands to stop.

Slotkin moved on, asking questions about using cybersecurity before she and Hegseth clashed again.

“Have you given the order to be able to shoot at unarmed protesters in any way?” she asked.

Hegseth laughed at her.

“I’m just asking the question. Don’t laugh,” she said. “The whole country — and by the way, my colleagues across the aisle —”

Hegseth cut her off to ask, “What is that based on? What evidence would you have that an order like that has ever been given?”

“It is based on Donald Trump giving that order to your predecessor, to a Republican Secretary of Defense who I give a lot of credit to because he didn’t accept the order. He has more guts and balls than you because he said, ‘I’m not going to send in the military to do something that I know in my gut is not right. He was asked to shoot at their legs. He wrote that in his book. That’s not hearsay. So your pooh-poohing of this, it just shows you don’t understand who we are as a country. And all of my colleagues across the aisle, especially the ones that served, should want an apolitical military and not want citizens to be scared of their own military.”

Hegseth is a slimy snake who never seems to give a straight answer to any Congressperson or Senator, no matter how many times & ways they rephrase their questions.

Newsweek: Support for ICE flips

Public opinion on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has undergone a dramatic shift, as new polling has revealed a reversal in support for the agency.

The polling comes after President Donald Trump sent 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to Los Angeles in response to reported violence against law enforcement, specifically ICE agents carrying out deportation raids in the city amid protests of White House immigration policies.

Trump faced criticism over the decision to send in troops, as nationwide protests taking place over the weekend were attended by an estimated 4 to 6 million people, and polls show that public opinion about ICE may be shifting.

According to the latest YouGov/Economist poll, conducted between June 13 and June 16 among 1,512 adults, ICE’s net favorability rating currently stands at a net -5 points, with 42 percent holding a favorable opinion, and 47 percent holding an unfavorable opinion.

That is down from a week ago, when a survey by the same pollsters put ICE’s net favorability at +2 points, with 45 percent holding a favorable opinion, and 43 percent holding an unfavorable opinion.

Both polls had a margin of error of between plus or minus 3.3 and 3.5 percentage points.

2paragraphs: Gavin Newsom Calls Trump “A Truly Disturbed Person” After “Hatred” Comment

At the White House, President Donald Trump was asked by a reporter: “Will your recent dust-ups with Governor Newsom impact additional wildfire relief out there? They’ve requested 40 billion.”

The President of the United States replied, “Yeah, maybe,” and said of California Governor Gavin Newsom, “The man’s incompetent. He shouldn’t have fires like that.”

This buffoon is our president?
