Inquirer: ICE facilities need ‘drastic improvements,’ says Fil-Am attorney general

California Attorney General Rob Bonta is demanding state detention centers make “significant improvements” to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention standards.

That’s after a new 165-page report from the Department of Justice released Monday found that all of the state’s six privately-operated immigration detention facilities are failing to meet basic requirements for mental health care, medical recordkeeping, and suicide prevention. The report also found excessive use of force, discipline against detainees and use of solitary confinement.

Reuters: White House seeks to cut TSA funding and boost air, rail safety

The White House said on Friday it wants to cut funding for the Transportation Security Administration by $247 million, while boosting spending on rail and air safety.

In its proposal on Friday to cut TSA officer levels, the White House said, “TSA has consistently failed audits while implementing intrusive screening measures that violate Americans’ privacy and dignity.” It was not immediately clear how many positions the White House wants to cut.

And:

The proposal also calls for cutting funding by $308 million for Essential Air Service, which subsidizes commercial air service to rural airports and is popular with Republican lawmakers.

I’m no fan of TSA, but cutting a quarter billion dollars out of their budget hardly seems likely improve aviation security. Focus on their procedures and methods, not on their people.

Cutting Essential Air Service will be disastrous for many rural communities. It will also hit airlines hard while they’re also feeling the loss of international tourists thanks to the actions of King Donald & Co.

Daily Express: Temu halts Chinese shipments overnight as Trump kills tariff loophole in crackdown

Temu, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has ceased shipping products from China to the United States, according to a company spokesperson last Friday as a key tariff loophole was cancelled by the Trump administration.

Now, all U.S. orders will be dispatched from domestic warehouses within America, and products that were once shipped directly from China and dominated the site are now listed as out of stock.

This shift follows the Trump administration’s move to to end the de minimis exemption that permitted Chinese-made goods valued at no more than $800 to enter the U.S. duty-free. The exemption, which President Trump denounced as a “big scam” harmful to American small businesses, expired on this morning.

Most business will never notice, except those order stock & office supplies from China. As usual, King Donald is screwing the consumers, the “Little People”, every day American citizens.

Incidentally, this de minimis exception helped my family get their N-95 masks during the COVID epidemic. I found a supplier in Shanghai whose N-95 mask had the proper U.S. certification and who would ship them direct from Shanghai to my front porch for a reasonable price.

Rolling Stone: Spooked by Trade Wars, Trump Officials Hoard Supplies: ‘It Would Be Stupid Not To!’

Some Trump administration officials are stockpiling toilet paper and food before Trump’s tariffs cause prices to skyrocket

This is what they tell the geese:

Donald Trump’s trade wars with China and other nations are widely expected to cause sharp economic pain, but some experts have warned consumers not to hoard supplies and goods before prices skyrocket, arguing that mass stockpiling could backfire spectacularly.

But this is what the ganders do:

Two Trump administration officials and a Trump aide tell Rolling Stone that they have done some stockpiling of their own in recent weeks or months, and that they know others working in Republican politics — inside and outside of the administration — who are doing the same. One of the Trump officials says they have already run to Target to bulk-buy toilet paper, some types of food, and other household supplies.

When asked why they’re doing this, the Trump aide — who says they and their partner have done similar household-supply hoarding lately, and are also “stashing cash” reserves in their D.C.-area home — simply replies: “Because it would be stupid not to!” The aide adds that they still believe in Trump’s tariffs regime, though, citing the supposed advantage of “short-term pain” in exchange for long-term “prosperity.”

Independent: Even El Salvador’s president questioned Trump team on if migrants being sent were actually gang members: report

El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele privately ‘expressed concern’ about who the Trump administration sent to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center, according to the report

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele asked the Trump administration for evidence that the 238 Venezuelans deported to his country’s maximum-security prison last month were actually part of a notorious gang, according to a report.

While Bukele and President Donald Trump appeared to be on the same page at last month’s meeting in the Oval Office, Bukele privately “expressed concern” about who the Trump administration sent to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center, known as CECOT, according to The New York Times.

Bukele’s concern sparked a “scramble” among U.S. officials to get him evidence that the migrants belonged to the transnational Tren de Aragua gang, The Times reported.

Daily Mail: ICE Barbie Kristi Noem [Bimbo #2] and Homeland Security advisor Corey Lewandowski’s cozy DC living arrangement revealed

‘Don’t forget DC is a small town and people talk. It is an open secret that they are together.

‘It has always been joked about that Navy Yard is a dorm for Hill Republicans and Trump staffers – now it’s even higher up, with married cabinet secretaries bunking their volunteer chiefs.

‘Keeping the Homeland “secure”, or at least pretending to, is now 24/7 I suppose.’

Mom-of-three Noem [Bimbo #2], 53, invited her kids and grandchildren to DC over the Easter weekend when she made international headlines for having her purse snatched as they ate at a burger bar.

Only days later, DailyMail.com spotted former Trump campaign manager Lewandowski walking back and forth between their two residences, set among artisan coffee shops, bars, and chic waterfront restaurants.

On one occasion the veteran lobbyist emerged from Noem’s [Bimbo #2] apartment complex in his trademark suit, necktie and US flag pin and climbed into an Uber.

The next evening Lewandowski walked out clutching a duffel bag, crossed the street where a Secret Service detail is parked up 24/7 and headed inside his own building.

Noem [Bimbo #2] was the Republican Governor of South Dakota and a rising MAGA star when DailyMail.com first disclosed details of their years-long, clandestine affair in September 2023.

Dad-of-four Lewandowski wouldn’t comment while Noem [Bimbo #2] – married to her insurance exec husband Bryon for the past 33 years – denied the fling.

A DailyMail.com source insisted this week, however: ‘There’s no question the relationship is ongoing.

‘They continue to travel together, they continue to socialize together. Very clearly, they’re still having an extra-marital relationship.’

Guardian: Ice seeking out unaccompanied immigrant children to deport or prosecute

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) officials are seeking out unaccompanied immigrant children in operations nationwide with a view to deporting them or pursuing criminal cases against them or adult sponsors sheltering them legally in the US, according to sources and an Ice document.

In recent months, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Ice have begun engaging in “welfare checks” on children who arrived in the US alone, usually via the US-Mexico border, to “ensure that they are safe and not being exploited”, according to a DHS spokesperson.

Although DHS is characterizing the welfare visits as benevolent, an internal Ice document accessed by the National Immigration Project advocacy group and then shared shows Ice is also seeking out children who came into the US alone as immigrants – and their US-based sponsors – for immigration enforcement purposes and/or to pursue criminal prosecutions. The recent operations and document confirm a February report from Reuters, that the Trump administration has directed Ice to track down and deport this group.

How does one “[pursue] criminal cases against them or adult sponsors sheltering them LEGALLY in the US”? These creeps will do anything to get their numbers up.

Robert Reich: Do you see how perilously close we are to the edge?

Friends,

Let’s say you don’t like what the Trump administration is doing, or you don’t like Trump. You express these views on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.

You take a two-week vacation in France. When you try to return to the United States, U.S. immigration agents arrest you. They detain you in solitary confinement. They don’t let you contact your family. They don’t let you contact a lawyer. Then they send you to a brutal prison in El Salvador.

But wait! You scream over and over. You can’t do this! I’m an American citizen!

Your screams have no effect.

Sound far-fetched? Recently, a French scientist was prevented from entering the United States because U.S. Border Patrol agents had found messages from him in which he had expressed his “personal opinion” to colleagues and friends about Trump’s science policies.

In another case, immigration agents detained Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a kidney transplant specialist and professor at Brown University who was trying to return to the United States after visiting relatives in Lebanon.

Dr. Alawieh was not allowed to do that. She was deported despite having a valid visa and a court order blocking her removal. Federal authorities alleged that they found “sympathetic photos and videos of prominent Hezbollah figures” in her phone and that she attended the funeral for the leader of Hezbollah in February.

But these are just the Trump regime’s allegations. No court has been able to review this evidence.

U.S. border officials concede they’re using more aggressive tactics these days, which the administration calls “enhanced vetting,” at ports of entry to the United States.

Okay, so maybe you don’t go abroad. You just express views that the current U.S. government regime dislikes. As a result, U.S. government agents arrest and detain and then “disappear” you. They say you’re a threat to national security.

Again, not as far-fetched as it sounds.

The regime has begun to target legal immigrants in the United States who have expressed views that the Trump regime believes threaten national security and undermine foreign policy.

Investigators for Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been searching videos, online posts, and news clippings of campus protests against the Israel-Hamas war.

To deport people living in the United States with green cards or valid visas, the Trump regime has invoked a rarely used provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act that gives the secretary of state sweeping power to expel foreigners who are seen as a threat to the country’s foreign policy interests.

Using that authority, ICE agents arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia graduate who has Palestinian heritage and took on a prominent role in the pro-Palestinian protests at the school, and Badar Khan Suri, an Indian citizen who has been studying and teaching at Georgetown.

Mr. Khalil has a green card, which means he is a legal permanent resident.

Apparently, the State Department believes Dr. Suri engaged in antisemitic speech that would undermine diplomatic efforts to get Israel and Hamas to agree to a ceasefire. He is in the United States on a visa for academics.

On Monday night, Dr. Suri was surrounded by masked Homeland Security agents outside his home in Virginia, arrested, and placed in an unmarked SUV. A judge has temporarily blocked his removal from the country.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, accuses Khalil of “siding with terrorists” and Dr. Suri of “spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media.”

But why should we believe her? She has provided no evidence. Why should we believe anything the Trump regime alleges? Neither Khalil nor Suri has been charged with a crime.

Or consider Venezuelan and Salvadoran men who have been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Where are they now? Their families don’t know. They’ve been disappeared over the past week, with no explanation provided by the government over why or where they may be.

None of these cases has been reviewed by a court of law. There have been no independent findings that any of these people constitute a danger to the United States, or even that their views are dangerous.

There’s not even been an independent finding that these people are non-Americans. For all we know, they could be just like you or me — Americans who have expressed views that the Trump regime dislikes.

Do you see how perilously close we are to the edge?
