USA Today: Trump amps up military, CIA action against Venezuela. Here’s what to know.

The United States has bombed six ships near Venezuela President Donald Trump greenlit the CIA to operate inside the country. Why is this happening?

The Trump administration is poised to massively raise the stakes in its feud with the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who it accuses of supporting narcotrafficking and collusion with drug cartels.

President Donald Trump‘s startling Oct. 15 announcement that on-land strikes against Venezuela could come soon, which follows six strikes on Venezuelan boats that have killed more than two dozen people, raises questions as to what caused Trump’s sudden aggression and where it will lead.

Maduro has already offered Venezuela’s natural resources, Trump said Oct. 17. “You know why? Because he doesn’t want to f— around with the United States,” he added.

Markets Insider: The trade war is back: Stocks plunge on Trump’s ‘massive’ tariff threat

  • Stocks plunged on Friday after Trump revived fears of the trade war with China.
  • The president said he would consider a “massive increase” in tariffs on China.
  • Investors are concerned that a trade deal with Beijing could be in jeopardy.

US stocks sold off on Friday as President Donald Trump threatened to revive the trade war with China. The S&P 500 saw its steepest loss since April.

In a post on Truth Social, the president said he believed China was “becoming very hostile” in trade talks, and that there now seemed like there was “no reason” to speak with China’s President Xi Jinping in South Korea as planned later this month.

The day was a painful reminder for investors that tariffs are still a threat to the market and the economy. Oil prices cratered in line with stocks, with brent and US crude prices down 4% on fears of weaker economic activity hitting energy demand. The 10-year Treasury yield dropped nine basis points to 4.05%.

“One of the Policies that we are calculating at this moment is a massive increase of Tariffs on Chinese products coming into the United States of America,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, adding that there were “many other countermeasures” that were under “serious consideration” in the US.

Trump added that China’s desire to impose export controls on items like rare earth minerals would “clog” markets and “make life difficult for virtually every Country in the World.”

A finalized trade deal with China, one of the US’s largest trading partners, has been at the top of investors’ wish list after tariff anxieties sent markets plummeting earlier this year.

“President Trump is sparking risk-off sentiments in markets,” José Torres, a senior economist at Interactive Brokers, said in a note on Friday. “Investors are clamoring for safe havens as a heavy levy increase could weigh on corporate earnings and the economic outlook.”

“Trump’s actions against China this morning were the excuse the market needed to begin correcting,” Tom Bruni, the head of markets at Stocktwits, wrote in a note.

Stocks got a boost after Trump first reached a preliminary trade agreement with China in mid-May, which involved both nations lowering tariffs for a 90-day period that has since been extended. In the last extension, the US agreed to lower its tariff rate to 30% on goods from China, while China is levying a 10% tariff on US goods through November 10.

Mirror US: Fox News viewers turn on Donald Trump as they slam president’s ‘reckless’ move

After Donald Trump was asked by a journalist to share more details on an attack in the Caribbean over the weekend, the president’s response left Fox News viewers baffled

Fox News viewers have turned on Donald Trump while slamming the president’s comments as “reckless.”

Last week, Trump said the US had carried out a strike in the southern Caribbean against a drug-carrying vessel that departed from Venezuela and was operated by the Tren de Aragua gang. He wrote in a social media post that 11 people were killed in the rare US military operation – a dramatic escalation in the Republican administration’s effort to stem the flow of narcotics from Latin America.

Then speaking at Naval Station Norfolk on Sunday beside the aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman on Sunday, Trump noted another vessel had been hit on Saturday. He said, “In recent weeks, the Navy has supported our mission to blow the cartel terrorists the hell out of the water … we did another one last night. Now we just can’t find any.” Just weeks ago, Venezuelan authorities released harrowing footage of a vessel being intercepted by a US warship.

Yesterday, Trump was asked by a Fox News reporter to share more details on Saturday’s attack. The journalist asked, “You said there was an attack yesterday night in the Caribbean, can you give more details on that?”

But Trump didn’t explain anything and instead responded, “My people will give you those details.” After the video was circulated on social media, Fox News viewers hit out at Trump, saying that mentioning a military attack without giving further details was a “reckless” move on his part.

A person wrote on X, “Announcing military action without details is reckless. The public deserves facts, not ‘my people will fill you in later.'” Another tweeted, “Trump: I just wear hats and make believe I stopped wars. I’m not a ‘details guy.’ Are you new?”

Someone else said, “He’s started building his ‘I knew nothing about it’ defence. It was all someone else’s idea, and I only heard about it after it happened.” A viewer said, “He knows it’s a war crime.” One more added, “Trump doesn’t know the details. He’s just the tariff guy. He’s not in charge of anything else.”

While Trump referred to a Saturday attack, it remains unclear whether he was referring to an attack that happened on Friday, or whether there was an additional one. In an apparent threat to strike Venezuela, he said, “They’re not coming in by sea anymore, so now we’ll have to start looking about the land because they’ll be forced to go by land.”

Addressing a strike carried out on Tuesday last week, Trump said 11 people were killed as he also posted a short video clip of a small vessel appearing to explode in flames. He wrote on Truth Social, “The strike occurred while the terrorists were at sea in International waters transporting illegal narcotics, heading to the United States. No U.S. Forces were harmed in this strike. Please let this serve as notice to anybody even thinking about bringing drugs into the United States of America.”

The video appears to show a long, multi-engine speedboat traveling at sea when a bright flash of light bursts over the craft. The boat is then briefly seen covered in flames. The video, which is largely in black and white, is not clear enough to see if the craft is carrying as many as 11 people. The video also did not show any large or clear stashes of drugs inside the boat.

Tren de Aragua originated more than a decade ago at an infamously lawless prison with hardened criminals in Venezuela’s central state of Aragua. The gang has expanded in recent years as more than 7.7 million Venezuelans fled economic turmoil and migrated to other Latin American countries or the US. Trump and administration officials have repeatedly blamed the gang for being at the root of the violence and illicit drug dealing that plague some cities.

And the president on Tuesday repeated his claim – contradicted by a declassified US intelligence assessment – that Tren de Aragua is operating under Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s control. The White House did not immediately explain how the military determined that those aboard the vessel were Tren de Aragua members. The size of the gang is unclear, as is the extent to which its actions are coordinated across state lines and national borders.

It comes as the daughter of Donald Trump’s doctor makes a bombshell claim about his health.

Time: ‘Military-Style’ ICE Raid On Chicago Apartment Building Shows Escalation in Trump’s Crackdown

At around 1 a.m. on Tuesday morning, armed federal agents rappelled from helicopters onto the roof of a five-storey residential apartment in the South Shore of Chicago. As other agents worked their way through the building from the bottom, they kicked down doors and threw flash bang grenades, rounding up adults and screaming children alike, detaining them in zip-ties and arresting dozens, according to witnesses and local reporting.

The military-style raid was part of a widespread immigration crackdown in the country’s third-largest city as part of the Trump Administration’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” which has brought a dramatic increase in federal raids and arrests.

The raid has drawn outrage throughout Chicago and the state of Illinois, with rights groups and lawmakers claiming it represents a dramatic escalation in tactics used by federal authorities in the pursuit of Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker accused the federal agents of separating children from their parents, zip-tying their hands, and detaining them in “dark vans” for hours. Videos show flashbang grenades erupting on the street, followed by residents of the building—children among them—being led to a parking lot across the street. Photos of the aftermath show toys and shoes littering the apartment hallways, evidence of those pulled from their beds by the operation that included FBI and Homeland Security agents.

‘Military-style tactics’

Pritzker condemned the raid and said that he would work with local law enforcement to hold the agents accountable. “Military-style tactics should never be used on children in a functioning democracy,” he said in a statement on Friday. “This didn’t happen in a country with an authoritarian regime – it happened here in Chicago. It happened in the United States of America – a country that should be a bastion of freedom, hope, and the rights of our people as guaranteed by the Constitution,” he added.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has touted some 900 arrests in its Chicago operation since it began in early September, as well as the 37 arrests made in the nighttime raid on Tuesday, all of whom it said were “involved in drug trafficking and distribution, weapons crimes and immigration violators.” The DHS said the building was targeted because it was “known to be frequented by Tren de Aragua members and their associates.” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem posted a video of the raid on social media, overlaid with dramatic music, showing helicopters shining bright lights onto the apartment, kicking down doors and armed agents leading people out of the building in cuffs.

A DHS spokesperson told CNN following the raid that children were taken into custody “for their own safety and to ensure these children were not being trafficked, abused or otherwise exploited.” The DHS also said that four children who are U.S. citizens with undocumented parents were taken into custody.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to send federal authorities and troops to Chicago and other Democratic-run cities to assist in immigration raids and to address what he perceives to be rampant crime.

The Trump Administration launched expanded immigration enforcement operations in Chicago on Sept. 8 as part of a wider federal crackdown on sanctuary cities across the country.

“This operation will target the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens in Chicago,” ICE Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in support of the operation.

Chicago officials mounted a pushback ahead of the crackdown. The city’s mayor, Brandon Johnson, signed an order directing Chicago law enforcement and officials not to cooperate with federal agents and established an initiative intended to protect residents’ rights. The city of Evanston, an urban suburb of Chicago, issued a statement warning its residents of impending raids by ICE agents and urging them to report sightings of law enforcement.

Zip-ties and guns

In the aftermath of the sweeping raid, residents and city lawmakers have been demanding answers from the federal government.

Ed Yohnka, from the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois (ACLU), told MSNBC on Saturday that the raid represented “an escalation of force and violence” from the federal government in Chicago.

“What we saw was a full-fledged military operation conducted on the south side of Chicago against an apartment building,” he added.

“They just treated us like we were nothing,” Pertissue Fisher, a U.S. citizen who lives in the apartment building, told ABC7 Chicago in an interview soon after the raid. She said she was then handcuffed, held for hours, and released around 3 a.m. This was the first time she said a gun was ever put in her face.

Neighbor Eboni Watson, who witnessed the raid, also told the ABC station that the children were zip-tied—some of them were without clothes—when they were taken out of the residential building by federal agents. “Where’s the morality?” Watson said she kept asking during the raid.

“As a father, I cannot help but think about what it means for a child to be torn from their bed in the middle of the night, detained for no reason other than a show of force,” National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) president Derrick Johnson said in a statement. “The trauma inflicted on these young people and their families is unconscionable.”

ICE and DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TIME.

Protests in the aftermath

The increased raids have turned Chicago into a flashpoint in the battle over Trump’s crackdown. Protests have hit the city in recent weeks over the ICE operations, and after the raid on Tuesday, they have concentrated outside the ICE Broadview detention facility near Chicago.

On Friday, at least 18 protestors were arrested near the facility as DHS head Kristi Noem said in a post late in the day that she and her team were blocked from entering the Village of Broadview Municipal Building.

“This is how JB Pritzker and his cronies treat our law enforcement. Absolutely shameful,” Noem said in a post on X.

On Saturday, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin shared on social media that law enforcement officers were “rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars.”

“One of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon,” McLaughlin said. “Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed US citizen who drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds.”

ICE’s tactics were criticized again on Friday, when Chicago Alderperson Jessie Fuentes was handcuffed by federal immigration agents at a Chicago medical center after questioning agents about their warrant to arrest at the medical center.

Chicago’s Mayor Johnson called Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)’s tactics “abusive.”

The raids come just days after President Trump signaled a desire to make greater use of the U.S. military in American cities during a speech to top military leaders, as he assailed a “war from within” the nation.

“We are under invasion from within,” he said, “no different than a foreign enemy, but more difficult in many ways, because they don’t wear uniforms.” In the same speech, he called for U.S. cities to be “training grounds” for the military.

Trump has frequently singled out Chicago in his long-running feud with Democratic-run cities, threatening it with his newly named “Department of War.”

Slingshot News: ‘We Don’t Even Know’: Trump Exposes Himself, Admits He’s Just Making Up Numbers About His Tariffs During Oval Office Announcement [Video]

During his remarks from the Oval Office several weeks ago announcing Apple’s additional U.S. investments, Donald Trump fessed up and stated that he didn’t even know what the numbers are for the “revenue” his tariffs are bringing in. “We don’t even know what the final number is,” Trump remarked.

Fox News: Trump warns Afghanistan over return of strategic Bagram Air Base to US control [Video]

The Taliban has controlled the airbase since 2021 and the US withdrew troops from the country

President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened Afghanistan, which is governed by the Taliban, if Bagram Air Base isn’t returned to the United States.

“If Afghanistan doesn’t give Bagram Airbase back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!!” he wrote on Truth Social.

The president didn’t elaborate on what consequences the country might face.

On Thursday, the president said the administration is “trying” to get the former U.S. Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan “back” from the Taliban.

In remarks to the press while standing alongside U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the president criticized the handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Joe Biden and said he had “a little breaking news.”

“We’re trying to get it back,” Trump said. “We’re trying to get it back because they need things from us.”

Trump did not expand on whom he was referring to or, if referring to the Taliban, the terrorist organization that took over the country in 2021, what they “need” from the U.S.

“We want that base back, but one of the reasons we want the base is, as you know, it’s an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons,” Trump added.

On Saturday evening, Trump told reporters the administration wants Bagram back “right away,” and “if they don’t do it, you’re going to find out what I’m going to do.”

The Taliban took over the country after the U.S. pulled out of Afghanistan in 2021.

The U.S. claimed Bagram Air Base, which was built by the Soviets in the 1950s, in 2001 when the military went into Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks.

In 2021, when the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan, it secretly left the base in the middle of the night on July 1, leaving it to the Afghan government.

The Taliban captured the base six weeks later in August of 2021, on the same day Kabul fell.

Earlier this year, White House hostage envoy Adam Boehler met with Taliban officials in Kabul while working to get hostage George Glezmann released, the first direct meeting since the pullout in 2021.

Boehler, along with another U.S. envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, met with the Taliban’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, and reportedly discussed ways to “develop bilateral relations between the two countries, issues related to citizens, and investment opportunities in Afghanistan,” according to a Taliban statement.

The removal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan began during the first Trump administration in March 2020, and open-source intelligence showed that the Taliban had been making gains across Afghanistan in the year leading up to the August 2021 withdrawal.

Under the deal forged by the first Trump administration, the U.S. agreed to withdraw all U.S. forces by May 1, 2021, but Biden extended the withdrawal date to August 2021.

Knewz: MAGA fumes as Newsom mocks Trump with Bibles

Gavin Newsom has once again gotten under the skin of conservatives, this time by selling signed copies of Bibles on his merchandise site, Knewz.com can reveal. The California governor’s team has been mimicking Donald Trump for weeks, leaving his supporters raging and failing to see the irony of it all.

This time, Newsom and his handlers took it up a notch by listing Bibles for sale on his website. (The Bibles were marked as sold out.) The site also includes several other items mocking Trump slogans like a “Newsom Was Right About Everything” cap, a “Trump Is Not Hot” tank top and a T-shirt labeled “The Chosen One” featuring an image of Kid Rock, Tucker Carlson and the late Hulk Hogan with a halo looking over Newsom. There’s at least one person who will not be purchasing any of these items: Fox News personality Will Cain. On an episode of The Will Cain Show, the host went off on Newsom for purportedly selling Bibles. “He seems to have found ground, legs with the left by mocking President Trump,” Cain cried on TV. “Like the ChatGPT personality, he’s just borrowing now from President Trump, copying his style with X posts, now he’s even going for his own MAGA style merch.”

Newsom’s antics have already reached the White House, as earlier this month, Trump took to Truth Social to call out his fellow politician. He raged, “Gavin Newscum is way down in the polls. He is viewed as the man who is destroying the once Great State of California. I will save California!!! President DJT.”

Slingshot News: ‘The River Is Right Out Their Window’: Trump Shows Signs Of Cognitive Decline, Believes The Federal Reserve Is Located On The Potomac River [Video]

During his remarks at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. several weeks ago, Donald Trump lashed out at Fed Chair Jerome Powell and the ongoing renovation of the Federal Reserve. Trump believes the Federal Reserve is located “right next to a thing called the Potomac River.”

Knewz: Gavin Newsom launches new mock nickname for J.D. Vance

California Governor Gavin Newsom has escalated his online feud with J.D. Vance, leaning into his new nickname for the vice president — “Just Dance Vance.” Knewz.com has learned that Newsom’s communications team recently posted a meme of Vance’s face edited onto the body of Australian break-dancer Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, who became a viral sensation after scoring zero points in the 2024 Olympic breakdancing competition.

‘Just Dance Vance’

Newsom’s team first rolled out “Just Dance Vance” during debates over Republican redistricting strategies. GOP officials in states like Texas and Indiana have been under pressure from President Donald Trump’s allies to redraw congressional maps in their favor ahead of the 2026 midterms. In a recent post on X, Newsom’s office wrote, mocking President Trump’s signature pattern of tweeting in all caps, “NOT EVEN JD ‘JUST DANCE’ VANCE CAN SAVE TRUMP FROM THE DISASTROUS MAPS ‘WAR’ HE HAS STARTED.”

Newsom’s team doubles down on Vance’s nickname

The nickname gained traction again after reporter Nick Sortor posted that Vance would join Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington. Sortor hinted at another potential Oval Office clash, recalling the tense February exchange in which Vance told Zelensky to “offer some words of appreciation for the United States of America and the president who’s trying to save your country.” Newsom’s team replied with the meme of Vance’s face on Gunn’s body, captioned, “A highly anticipated ‘showdown.’”

Tensions rise between Newsom and Trump

The barbs came at a time of escalating tensions between President Donald Trump and the California governor. In June, Trump ordered thousands of National Guard troops and hundreds of Marines to Los Angeles to counter large protests against his mass deportation campaign. Newsom condemned the move, arguing that Trump’s true goal was to advance “the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial president.” The episode deepened their already hostile relationship, which has increasingly played out on social media. While Trump often calls the governor “Newscum,” Newsom has hit back by calling the president “tiny hands” in his posts. The back-and-forth has expanded to include other figures in Trump’s inner circle, with Vance becoming Newsom’s latest target.

Newsom’s “creepy” obsession with Trump

The White House brushed off Newsom’s tactics as an unhealthy fixation. “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but Gavin’s obsession is getting a little creepy at this point,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Newsweek. Newsom, on the other hand, defended his approach, insisting that he is simply mirroring Trump’s own behavior. “I’m just following his example. If you have issues with what I’m putting out, you sure as hell should have concerns with what he’s putting out as president,” he said in a statement.
