Daily Beast: Leavitt [Bimbo #1] Opens Way to Massive Move Against Immigrants’ Rights

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt [Bimbo #1] refused to shut down speculation that Donald Trump could suspend due process for migrants.

Leavitt [Bimbo #1] was asked about pausing the writ of habeas corpus at a hastily announced press briefing on Monday morning focused on immigration.

Habeas corpus, which is preserved in Article I of the Constitution, is the legal process that allows the courts to review whether a person is being wrongly detained or imprisoned.

“The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it,” it reads.

The Trump administration has been accused of denying migrants due process in an effort to quickly remove them from the U.S. and has faced off with multiple judges over its mass deportation effort.

Leavitt [Bimbo #1] insisted that the administration will continue to deport undocumented immigrants.

“The president is open to all remedies to do that,” she said.

The Dispatch: Trump’s Team of Losers

The president has hired lots of people who couldn’t win their own elections.

He’s not alone. Hegseth is only one member of the second Trump administration to have been plucked from the pantheon of electoral duds and given a second lease on political life. From the Cabinet all the way to high-profile White House aides, there are failed candidates for major office who might have otherwise toiled for years in obscurity or, even worse, local politics if not for Trump’s magnanimity. Contrary to the president’s boasted affection for winners, it’s loyalty to Trump, sometimes even in the face of defeat, that remains the most valuable characteristic for a Republican looking to get ahead these days. Even the losers.

So the pathway for aspiring MAGA politicians is clear: in order to get the Trump administration imprimatur to win a future race for office, try losing one first.

CNN World: Why Trump’s Crimea proposal would tear down a decades-old pillar of the global order

US President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Ukraine should recognize Russia’s control over Crimea, the southern Ukrainian peninsula that Moscow annexed more than a decade ago, is threatening to upend international law and order.

Is this legal?

No. If the Trump administration was to somehow recognize Russian sovereignty over Crimea, it would be breaching international law as well as multiple declarations and agreements made by the United States, including by the first Trump White House.

“In terms of international law, such a pronouncement would be null and void,” said Sergey Vasiliev, an international law expert and professor at the Open University in the Netherlands.

“That territorial acquisitions that result from the use of force shall not be recognized as legal is basically one of the bedrock principles of international law,” Vasiliev told CNN.

Recognizing Crimea as part of Russia would put the Trump administration in breach of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, in which the US made a commitment to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders, in exchange for Kyiv giving up its nuclear weapons.

In 2018, during the first Trump administration, then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement reaffirming the US’ refusal to recognize the Kremlin’s claims of sovereignty over Crimea.

Associated Press: Ex-Justice Department prosecutor challenges his firing by the White House after Laura Loomer post

Adam Schleifer, an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, was fired without explanation last month in an email from a White House official. It came exactly one hour after Loomer, a conservative internet personality known for incendiary comments, called for his removal in a social media post highlighting his past critical views about Trump while running in a Democratic primary for a New York congressional seat.

In a filing with the Merit Systems Protection Board — which is responsible for protecting government employees from political reprisals — Schleifer argues he was unlawfully fired in retaliation for protected political speech from a time when he wasn’t working as a government lawyer. He’s seeking reinstatement, back pay and other relief.

The Atlantic: DOGE Was Bad. Schedule F Will Be Worse.

In the waning days of the first Trump administration, the White House announced a plan to convert an estimated 50,000 government employees to a status similar to political appointees—meaning that they would become “at will” hires who serve purely at the president’s pleasure. Schedule F, as this plan was known, was never implemented then and was revoked immediately under Joe Biden’s presidency. But now the policy is back, formally resurrected by executive order on April 18. If this new-look Schedule F survives the inevitable court challenges, it will mark a major step forward in a MAGA quest laid out by J. D. Vance in 2021 to “fire every single mid-level bureaucrat, every civil servant in the administrative state,” and “replace them with our people.”

Newsweek: Employees Have a New Fear: Immigration Raids

“Every person in this country should be terrified, because when the government stops caring about due process, nobody’s citizenship papers are enough to keep them safe.”

Raw Story: Trump’s latest order will demand truck drivers in US speak English

President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order at 5 p.m. Monday requiring commercial truck drivers in the United States to speak English, “America’s official language,” according to his spokeswoman

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt tweeted a link to a Breitbart article on Monday morning.

A document reviewed by Breitbart said, “President Trump believes that English is a non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers, as they should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety officers, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station personnel, and provide and receive feedback and directions in English.”

Just another unconstitutional overreach by our delusional King Donald — this violates the First and (to the extent that interstate commerce is not involved) Tenth Amendments.

Telegraph: Trump’s attempt to upend the global order has already been defeated

America has emerged from the trade war as an international laughing stock

Characterised by screeching handbrake turns, made-up policy on the hoof and mixed-messaging on steroids, it’s been another week of chaos in Washington.

If anyone knows what on Earth it is that the US is trying to achieve on trade, and much else besides, then I’d like to hear from them, because having come to the US capital in the hope of garnering some insights, I’m none the wiser.

What’s now increasingly obvious, however, is that Trump is in ragged retreat; he’s compromising all over the shop, such that if the plan was to upend the established global order, one can almost definitely say that, beyond the rhetoric, it is already over.

Rank lack of professionalism and organisation has defined the endeavour all along, and now it’s coming apart at the seams. Sensing an administration on the run, no one is any longer hurrying to do a trade deal with the US. From Britain to Canada and beyond, getting the right deal rather than a quick one has become the new mantra.

Trump has in the meantime made himself – and the US – into an international laughing stock, never mind the damage that policy uncertainty is inflicting on the global economy. You’d be forgiven for thinking that chaos is itself the policy goal.

Repeatedly forced to row back on its demands and aspirations, the White House has been left looking back-footed and ridiculous.

Washington Post: Trump approval sinks as Americans criticize his major policies, poll finds

Trump’s overall approval rating is lower than it was only two months ago. The poll shows that 39 percent of adult Americans approve of the way Trump is handling his job, compared with 55 percent who disapprove, including 44 percent who disapprove strongly. In February, those numbers were 45 percent positive and 53 percent negative.

39% and dropping!

Worst.

President.

Ever.

Alternet: ‘Drowning in hubris’: How a conservative legal doctrine — and his own ‘stupidity’ — could topple Trump

President Donald Trump is unique among “tyrants” — both in his cruelty and his “stupidity,” Guardian foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdall writes.

“Measured by willingness and capacity to harm the world’s poorest and most vulnerable, wreak global economic mayhem and threaten nuclear annihilation, Trump is uniquely dangerous — and ever more so by the day,” according to Tisdall.

Still, Tisdall points to a recent op-ed from University of California, Davis law professor Aaron Tang, who last week wrote an op-ed in the New York Times suggesting “the Supreme Court-tested ‘major questions doctrine’ could bring [Trump] to heel.”

“[The doctrine] requires the government to demonstrate a ‘clear congressional authorization’ when it makes decisions of great ‘economic and political significance,’” Tisdall writes of Tang’s analysis.

“Of all the tools in the tyrant-toppling toolbox, none are so potentially decisive as those supplied by Trump’s own stupidity,” Tisdall adds. “… Corruption on this scale cannot pass unchallenged indefinitely. Avarice alone may be Trump’s undoing.”

“All this points to one conclusion: as a tyrant, let alone as president, Trump is actually pretty useless – and as his failures, frustrations and fantasies multiply, he will grow ever more dangerously unstable. Trump’s biggest enemy is Trump.”

“But right now, the best, brightest hope is that, drowning in hubris, Trump will destroy himself,” the correspondent concludes.
