The home of a South Carolina judge was destroyed after it went up in flames on Saturday.
A fire engulfed the home of Judge Diane Goodstein, who serves on the state Circuit Court, and led to three people being hospitalized with injuries, including her husband, according to a report from The Post and Courier.
The cause of the fire is not immediately known, and the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said it is investigating the incident.
Newsweek contacted SLED via email on Monday outside regular working hours.
Goodstein later said she is “alright” in her first comments since the fire, made to the Daily Mail.
Why It Matters
The fire comes weeks after Goodstein issued a ruling against the Trump administration.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the blaze, and there is currently no evidence to suggest it was an act of arson. The incident quickly sparked online conversation hostility toward members of the judiciary who rule against Trump and his allies.
What To Know
The judge’s husband, former Democratic state Senator Arnold Goodstein, was among those injured after he reportedly jumped from the house and had to be rescued from a marshy area behind the property, a neighbor said.
The neighbor, Tom Peterson, told The Post and Courier that the judge told him she was walking her dogs on the beach when the home caught fire.Captain K.C. Campbell with the Colleton County Fire Rescue told the outlet that three people had been hospitalized, one of whom was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina.
Goodstein issued a ruling last month temporarily blocking South Carolina from handing over millions of voters’ personal data to the Trump administration.
The state’s Republican Governor Henry McMaster and DOJ official Harmeet Dhillon criticized the ruling.
Democratic Representative Daniel Goldman of New York said in a post on X that Republicans including President Donald Trump and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller have been “doxxing and threatening judges who rule against Trump, including Judge Goodstein.”
Miller responded by calling Goldman “deeply warped and vile” and accused him of spreading “libelous madness,” while countering that the Trump administration has launched a “government-wide effort to combat and prosecute illegal doxing.”
In recent weeks, Trump allies have ramped up their criticism of judges they accuse of being politically biased against conservatives.
Miller wrote in a post on X on Saturday that “far-left Democrat judges” were shielding a “large and growing movement of leftwing terrorism in this country.”
And X CEO Elon Musk, who formerly served as a top adviser to Trump, on Sunday shared his agreement to a post which called to impeach “corrupt judges.”
What People Are Saying
A SLED spokesperson told FITSNews: “SLED is investigating a house fire in Colleton County. The investigation is active and ongoing. More information may be available as the investigation continues.”
The director of communications for Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom, Izzy Gardon, wrote on his personal X account: “A few weeks ago, one of Trump’s top DOJ officials publicly targeted this judge. Today, the judge’s home is on fire.”
Online political commentator Wajahat Ali wrote on X: “.@elonmusk, any thoughts about South Carolina Judge Goodstein’s home burning to the ground in an apparent act of arson that almost killed her family? You just tweeted against judges today, so I’m curious if you feel you engaged in some dangerous hateful rhetoric?”
What Happens Next
An investigation into the fire at Goodstein’s home is ongoing.

‘Watch Him With The Hands’: Trump Tests The Limits Of His Hypocrisy, Takes Jab At Gavin Newsom’s Body Language In Tone-Deaf Rant
During a recent bilateral meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, Donald Trump hypocritically ranted about California Governor Gavin Newsom and his body language, specifically his hand gestures. Trump, who is known for wildly flailing his hands like he’s playing the accordion, should be the last person to call others out on their hand gestures.
Independent: Federal agents to ‘flood the zone’ after Supreme Court opens door for racial profiling in Los Angeles immigration raids
The Trump administration is vowing to “FLOOD THE ZONE” after the Supreme Court opened the door for federal law enforcement officers to roam the streets of Los Angeles to make immigration arrests based on racially profiling suspects.
A 6-3 decision from the nation’s high court Monday overturned an injunction that blocked federal agents from carrying out sweeps in southern California after a judge determined they were indiscriminately targeting people based on race and whether they spoke Spanish, among other factors.
The court’s conservative majority did not provide a reason for the decision, which is typical for opinions on the court’s emergency docket.
In a concurring opinion, Trump-appointed Justice Brett Kavanaugh said that “apparent ethnicity alone cannot furnish reasonable suspicion” but it can be a “relevant factor” for immigration enforcement.
Attorney General Pam Bondi called the ruling a “massive victory” that allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to “continue carrying out roving patrols in California without judicial micromanagement.”
The Department of Homeland Security said its officers “will continue to FLOOD THE ZONE in Los Angeles” following the court’s order.
“This decision is a victory for the safety of Americans in California and for the rule of law,” the agency said in a statement accusing Democrat Mayor Karen Bass of “protecting” immigrants who have committed crimes.
Federal law enforcement “will not be slowed down and will continue to arrest and remove the murderers, rapists, gang members and other criminal illegal aliens that Karen Bass continues to give safe harbor,” according to Homeland Security assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
The court’s opinion drew a forceful rebuke from liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic justice on the bench, who accused the conservative justices of ignoring the Fourth Amendment, which protects against unlawful protects against unlawful searches and seizures
“We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job,” she wrote in a dissenting opinion.
“The Fourth Amendment protects every individual’s constitutional right to be “free from arbitrary interference by law officers,’” she added. “After today, that may no longer be true for those who happen to look a certain way, speak a certain way, and appear to work a certain type of legitimate job that pays very little.”
Immigration raids throughout the Los Angeles area in June sparked massive protests demanding the Trump administration withdraw ICE and federal agents from patrolling immigrant communities.
In response, Trump federalized National Guard troops and sent in hundreds of Marines despite objections from Democratic city and state officials. The administration deployed roughly 5,000 National Guard soldiers and Marines to the Los Angeles area, assisting with more than 170 law enforcement operations carried out by federal agencies, according to the Department of Defense.
The Pentagon has ended most of those operations, but hundreds of National Guard members remain active in southern California.
California Governor Gavin Newsom sued the administration, alleging the president illegally deployed the troops in violation of a 140-year-old law that prohibits the military from performing domestic law enforcement operations.
ACLU legal director Cecillia Wang, representing groups who sued to block indiscriminate raids in Los Angeles, said the Supreme Court order “puts people at grave risk.”
The order allows federal agents “to target individuals because of their race, how they speak, the jobs they work, or just being at a bus stop or the car wash when ICE agents decide to raid a place,” she said.
“For anyone perceived as Latino by an ICE agent, this means living in a fearful ‘papers please’ regime, with risks of violent ICE arrests and detention,” Wang added.
In his lengthy concurring opinion, Kavanaugh suggested that the demographics of southern California and the estimated 2 million people without legal permission living in the state support ICE’s sweeping operations.
He also argued that because Latino immigrants without legal status “tend to gather in certain locations to seek daily work,” work in construction, and may not speak English, officers have a “reasonable suspicion” to believe they are violating immigration law.
Sotomayor criticized Kavanaugh’s assessment that ICE was merely performing “brief stops for questioning.”
“Countless people in the Los Angeles area have been grabbed, thrown to the ground and handcuffed simply because of their looks, their accents and the fact they make a living by doing manual labor,” she wrote. “Today, the court needlessly subjects countless more to these exact same indignities.”
Because the court did not provide a reasoning behind the ruling, it is difficult to discern whether the justices intend for the order to have wider effect, giving Donald Trump a powerful tool to execute his commands for millions of arrests for his mass deportation agenda.
Bass warned that the ruling could have sweeping consequences.
“I want the entire nation to hear me when I say this isn’t just an attack on the people of Los Angeles, this is an attack on every person in every city in this country,” she said in a statement.
Showbizz Daily: ICE ‘Superman’ Dean Cain injured: Gavin Newsom jokes about it
Dean Cain, known for his role as Superman in the series ‘Lois and Clark,’ has sparked controversy by joining U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), sparking criticism on several social media platforms.
So much so that when the actor shared on X that he had been injured, jokes about it quickly flooded the comments section.
However, no one expected the most viral of all to come from the extremely active Press Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom.
“Turns out arresting innocent Latino kids and farm workers is harder than playing Superman…” commented Gavin Newsom in response to Dean Cain.
How did Dean Cain react to this response? Badly. He did not hesitate to respond. “Hysterical gaslighting from these idiots. Injury had nothing to do with ICE duties, just a simple home mishap…,” said the actor.
Meanwhile, dozens of users suggested that he put ‘ice’ on the injury.
Unfortunately for Dean Cain, John Oliver also joined in the mockery and did not hesitate to attack him on his programme ‘Last Week Tonight’ on HBO.
However, he did not need to resort to the injury, as it was enough for him to criticise ICE and address the serious recruitment problem: “If all you can get is Dean Cain, you are f***d’’.

Raw Story: Gavin Newsom calls out Trump’s ‘dementia’ after he repeats wildfire conspiracy theory
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) accused President Donald Trump of having dementia because he keeps repeating the same lie over and over again.
The conspiracy theory is that Newsom somehow wasn’t releasing a flood of water that could be used to extinguish the wildfires in Southern California. Somehow he was sitting on tons of water that could be used to fight the fires that comes from snow runoff.
According to Trump, the entire wildfire in Southern California would never have happened to begin with due to sprinklers.
“You wouldn’t have had the fire because all the sprinklers would’ve worked in the houses,” said Trump.
Homes don’t have fire suppression sprinkler systems. Large structures do.
“Forty-six states have completely removed the sprinkler requirements for one- and two-family homes,” said the National Association of Home Builders.
As one fact-check, from CNN, explained, “This is false. Newsom has never refused to sign a ‘water restoration declaration.’ In fact, there is no such document, as Newsom’s office said on social media on Wednesday and experts on California water policy confirmed.”
Jeffrey Mount, a senior fellow in the Water Policy Center at the Public Policy Institute of California think tank, told CNN in January, “At no time was water scarcity in general an issue. Rather, there were local shortages of water during the firefight, principally due to infrastructure constraints. But Southern California has plenty of water in storage right now, so this was not a limiting factor.”
Newsom even published comments on the governor’s website from water agencies, water contractors, and a metro water district dispelling Trump’s myth.
Newsom replied to Trump’s post with a screen capture in which he asks the AI site Perplexity whether it’s a sign of dementia to repeat the same “crazy conspiracies” over and over again.
People with dementia often repeat the same statements, questions, and sometimes false or mistaken beliefs, primarily because of memory loss and impaired reasoning. This repetitive behavior can include everyday concerns, but may also involve delusions of persistent falsehoods, such as believing people are stealing from them or thinking they are in danger—sometimes leading to repeated expression of these ideas,” Perplexity wrote, according to Newsom’s screen capture.
Raw Story: ‘Stench of their product’: Trump snarls at news network in overnight rant on name change
Trump spent part of his evening touting his big win in Texas, where Republicans passed their redistricting bill, citing a poll by writing, “59% APPROVAL RATING FOR PRESIDENT TRUMP, MASSIVE LEAD OVER THE DEMOCRATS,” without citing what poll he was speaking of.
He then lashed out at California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been a thorn in his side on social media, by writing, “Gavin Newscum is way down in the polls. He is viewed as the man who is destroying the once Great State of California. I will save California!!! President DJT,” again without what polls he is talking about.
One hour later, he attacked Comcast, a frequent target, with an all-caps attack.
“MSNBC IS DOING SO POORLY IN THE RATINGS THAT THEY ARE LOOKING TO CHANGE THEIR NAME IN ORDER TO GET AWAY FROM THE STENCH OF THEIR FAKE NEWS PRODUCT. SO MUCH FUN TO WATCH THEIR WEAK AND INEFFECTIVE OWNER, “CONCAST,” HEADED BY DOPEY BRIAN ROBERTS, HOPELESSLY AND AIMLESSLY FLAILING IN THE WIND IN AN ATTEMPT TO DISASSOCIATE ITSELF FROM THE GARBAGE THAT THEY CREATED! MSNBC IS A FAILURE BY ANY NAME!!!” he claimed.

AFP: China Tells Citizens In LA To Boost Personal Security Over Unrest
China’s consulate in Los Angeles told its citizens in the area on Monday to strengthen personal security, after unrest in America’s second-biggest city.
“Chinese citizens in the region (should) strengthen personal security measures, stay away from gatherings, crowded areas, or places with poor public security, and avoid going out at night or travelling alone,” the consulate said in a statement.
They should also “closely monitor official announcements” and “raise their safety awareness”, it added.
Security forces faced off with protesters in the city on Sunday, as unruly protests over federal immigration raids continued for a third day, with President Donald Trump deploying National Guard troops.
Trump, who has made clamping down on illegal migration a key plank of his second term, vowed the troops would ensure “very strong law and order”.
The deployment in California — the first over the head of a state governor since the Civil Rights era — was “purposefully inflammatory,” Governor Gavin Newsom said.
The National Guard — a reserve military — is frequently used in natural disasters, and occasionally in instances of civil unrest, but almost always with the consent of local authorities.
Deadline: Trump Deploys 2,000 Troops To L.A. As Backlash & Protests To ICE Raids Surge; POTUS Action “Purposefully Inflammatory,” Newsom Warns
Reeling from widespread harsh ICE raids and responding protests and resistance over the past 24 hours, Los Angeles has become a powder keg with Donald Trump deploying 2,000 California National Guard troops over the objection of Governor Gavin Newsom and other SoCal leaders.
As rock-throwing and bellowing Angelenos sought to stop undocumented individuals being targeted by masked and heavily armored federal agents from being dragged away from a Home Depot in Paramount, Calif. and LA’s Westlake neighborhood on Saturday, Trump took to social media to announce a de facto takeover of the City of Angels. “If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can’t do their jobs, which everyone knows they can’t, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!” he said (caps’ Trump).
Declaring “to the extent that protests or acts of violence directly inhibit the execution of the laws, they constitute a form of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States” in a memorandum today, Trump says the federalized troops’ “duration of duty shall be for 60 days or at the discretion of the Secretary of Defense.”
…
Raising the stakes even more, and seeming to disregard federal law, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth proclaimed that “if violence continues, active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized — they are on high alert.”

Deadline: ABC News Suspends Terry Moran Over X Post That Called Trump Official Stephen Miller A “World-Class Hater”
ABC News said that it has suspended senior national correspondent Terry Moran over a late night X post, since deleted, attacking Trump administration official Stephen Miller as a “world class hater.”
…
Top Trump administration officials had called out the X post on Sunday morning, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying that the network should hold him “accountable” and Vice President JD Vance asking for an apology.
The 12:06 a.m. post called Stephen Miller, Trump’s deputy chief of staff, a “world class hater.”
“You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate.”
“Trump is a world-class hater. But his hatred is only a means to an end, and that end is his own glorification. That’s his spiritual nourishment.”
Unfortunately Terry Moran was right. Stephen Miller is the most reviled White House staffer of our times. And that’s an understatement.

Mediaite: Trump Threatens to Slap Gavin Newsom With Fines, Touts Tariffs in Late-Night Truth Social Storm
President Donald Trump was up late and throwing jabs Monday night into Tuesday morning, threatening to slap California Gov. Gavin Newsom with “large scale fines” over transgender athletes.
Posting to his Truth Social account around 1 a.m. ET, Trump attacked the governor with the moniker “Newscum” as he ranted about a “Biological Male” competing in the California state finals track meet over the weekend.
What a sad, pathetic way for our so-called “President” to act. For our President to mock one of our governors in that manner is inexcusable.
