POLITICO: Duckworth says DHS ‘fled the base’ during visit by Democrats

Sen. Tammy Duckworth said Homeland Security officials “locked the doors” of the Great Lakes Naval Base.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) said federal officials disappeared from a Navy base near Chicago on Friday after Democrats announced they would tour the facility ahead of the arrival of immigration officers.

In an interview with host Margaret Brennan on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Duckworth said when she joined fellow Illinois Democrats Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Brad Schneider for a tour of the Naval Station Great Lakes, Department of Homeland Security officials had given staff the day off, “locked the doors and left the base.”

“Basically, they fled the base,” Duckworth said. Naval Station Great Lakes, which opened in 1911, is the site for boot camp for Naval trainees.

Officials last week said that up to 300 ICE agents would be operating out of the Great Lakes Naval Base as President Donald Trump ramps up his efforts against Democratic-controlled sanctuary cities. Trump also said the administration will deploy the National Guard to the city, drawing outrage from Democrats including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Ahead of the lawmakers’ trip to the base, Duckworth said, she and her colleagues asked DHS if they could come tour the facility to have a “better understanding of what your operations are.”

DHS officials, she said, replied no.

“This is not the action of someone that’s doing something legal or that they’re- that they’re proud of,” said Duckworth.

“We certainly have sent the administration multiple inquiries about what they are planning on doing. Who are they bringing into Chicago? Are they planning to bring the National Guard in? They’ve none of that. They’ve not even reached out to local law enforcement to try to coordinate,” she added. “And we’ve not gotten any communications or feedback from the administration, whatsoever.”

Navy officials that were on the base during the Democrats’ tour told them that the assistance they’ve been requested to provide so far is only office space for ICE, Duckworth added.

While it is unclear when ICE officials or the National Guard will be sent to Chicago, Trump on Saturday said his administration will go to “WAR” with the city of Chicago.

“Chicago [is] about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, referring to the Department of Defense’s planned name change.

Illinois officials quickly responded to the post, calling the president a “tyrant” and a “declaration of war.”

“I take what the President of the United States says very seriously, because that is the respect you have to give to the office,” Duckworth said on Sunday. “And if that’s what he’s declaring, then let me make it clear, it would be an illegal order to declare war on a major city, any city within the United States, by the President of the United States.

Slingshot News: ‘Was That Part Of The Deal?’: Sen. Dick Durbin Torches GOP Colleagues Over Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ In Scathing Remarks

Miami Herald: ‘So Many Lies’: Trump Ally Faces Disciplinary Inquiry

Justice Department official Ed Martin is under investigation by the Office of Disciplinary Counsel in Washington, which handles attorney discipline. His Senate nomination to serve as U.S. attorney in D.C. stalled, prompting him to inform his staff in a farewell email. Martin claims the investigation violates his confidentiality and threatens his professional standing.

Democratic lawmakers and advocacy groups accused him of using prosecutorial threats to intimidate opponents of President Donald Trump and his associates. Trump replaced Martin with former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, who has been sworn in as interim U.S. attorney.

Trump also appointed Martin as associate deputy attorney general and pardon attorney. Martin will lead a task force investigating the perceived weaponization of federal law enforcement against Trump supporters.

CNN: Democratic senator places hold on Trump pick for top federal prosecutor in Miami saying Vance set precedent

A new battle is stirring on Capitol Hill as Senate Democrats have threatened to not move forward with confirmations of President Donald Trump’s US attorney nominees around the country – already following through with a hold on one of his picks.

Senate Democrats say they are merely following precedent established by now-Vice President JD Vance under President Joe Biden, when the then-senator held up US attorney nominations in protest of what he called the political prosecutions against Trump.

If it hinders the appointments of more twits like Alina “Bimbo #4” Habba, I’m all for it!

But stopping Trump from being able to fill the 93 US attorney slots across the US would place a notable strain on the justice system and could open up a continued tit-for-tat next time Democrats control the White House.

It will also spare us the drama of more revenge investigations and prosecutions by King Donald and his Attorney General Pam “Bimbo #3” Bondi.

MSNBC: Democratic senator questions whether RFK Jr. is the one ‘making decisions’ at HHS

“Either you’re lying, or you’re not the one making decisions,” Democratic Sen. Patty Murray told Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

When Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sat down with CBS News last month, the network’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook, pressed the Cabinet secretary on some of his most controversial decisions from recent months. RFK Jr., however, repeatedly said he wasn’t aware of the actions LaPook was describing.

Last week, the spectacularly unqualified HHS secretary ran into a similar problem during back-to-back appearances before House and Senate committees: Lawmakers kept asking Kennedy about steps he and his department have taken, and he kept responding with answers such as “When did I do that?” and “I don’t know about that.”

This week, it happened yet again, during Kennedy’s appearance before the Senate Appropriations Committee. Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, for example, asked about HHS cutting funding for ALS research. The secretary said the senator’s question was the first he’d heard about this.

As the hearing progressed, and the problem persisted, Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington raised a highly provocative point.

“Secretary Kennedy, listening to your testimony last week frankly left me pretty confused and concerned about what’s happening at your department,” the senator said. “You repeatedly claimed that staffing and funding cuts that have been reported on publicly and even confirmed by [HHS] staff are not happening. So either you’re lying, or you’re not the one making decisions.”

Or perhaps the brain worms have left him hopelessly debilitated? Perhaps a fresh road-kill buffet would help?

Fort Worth Star-Telegram: ‘Rigged System’: GOP Senators Thwart Nominee After Defying Trump

President Donald Trump pulled his nomination of Ed Martin for U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C. The White House was working to secure his nomination despite declining support from some Republican senators.

Instead, Trump plans for Martin to be an associate deputy attorney general and pardon attorney. Martin will likely recommend pardons for defendants involved in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. In this photo gallery, we review the defiance from Republican senators.

Martin’s nomination ran into significant hurdles, including his failure to disclose nearly 200 media appearances. He claimed under oath that he could not recall controversial statements, raising concerns among GOP senators.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said, “Last Friday, we received responses from Mr. Martin to our questions, and it raised even more questions. Mr. Martin made a number of false statements and contradictory statements that are easily disproven by the material he himself disclosed in his Senate Judiciary Questionnaire. And it wasn’t just to my questions—it was to Chairman Grassley’s questions as well.”

So Trump pulls a nomination for a douchebag crony to be U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., but still plans to give him a job as an associate deputy attorney general despite several red flags regarding his honesty and ethics.

Yup, sounds like what King Donald would do!
