New York TImes: Trump Has Made Claims About Abrego Garcia’s Tattoos. Here’s a Closer Look…

Gang experts say the tattoos on Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s knuckles are unlikely to signify gang membership. The president says otherwise.

Mendacious King Donald used an altered photo in his claim that Kilmar Abrego Garcio had MS-13 tattoos:

President Trump has claimed that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March, is a member of MS-13, the Salvadoran-American criminal gang, and that the tattoos on Mr. Abrego Garcia’s knuckles prove it.

In a post nearly three weeks ago on Truth Social, Mr. Trump’s social media platform, he gave his version of a primer on those tattoos, showing a photo of Mr. Abrego Garcia’s hand, with one small tattoo on each finger: a marijuana leaf, a smiley face with X’s for eyes, a cross and a skull.

Above each of those black tattoos was a letter or a number — M, S, 1 and 3 — in a sans-serif font that clearly had been superimposed onto the photo. “He’s got MS-13 tattooed onto his knuckles,” the president wrote in his post.

In other photos, however, including ones shared by Mr. Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, the letters and numbers do not appear on Mr. Abrego Garcia’s knuckles.

Guardian: Irish woman detained by US immigration released after 17 days in custody

An Irish woman who was detained by US immigration authorities because of a criminal record dating back almost 20 years has been released after 17 days in custody.

Cliona Ward, 54, who has lived legally in the US for decades, emerged on Wednesday from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) facility at Tacoma in Washington.

After visiting her sick father in Ireland she had been detained at San Francisco airport on 21 April, causing an outcry in Ireland and the US and a campaign for her release.

Last week a California judge agreed to an application for the original convictions to be formally overturned in a manner that would be recognised at a federal level, paving the way for her release, according to Ward’s lawyers.

The incarceration left Ward traumatised but she was thankful for the support and is now recuperating, her sister, Orla Holladay, wrote on a GoFundMe page. “Cliona is finally in her own bed and we are all ready for some quiet and reflection.”

Euronews: ‘A surprising debasement’: Trump administration sues four states over climate lawsuits and laws

The Trump Administration filed lawsuits against two US states on Wednesday, to stop them from taking legal action against fossil fuel companies for harms caused by climate change. On Thursday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) sued two more states over their climate laws.

Officials in the four Democratic states – Hawaii and Michigan, New York and Vermont – are defiant in the face of these unprecedented lawsuits.

It fits a strong pattern of anti-climate action measures that Trump has pursued during his first 100 days back in office. On the campaign trail last year, he pledged to “stop the wave of frivolous litigation from environmental extremists.”

Alternet: ‘Drowning in hubris’: How a conservative legal doctrine — and his own ‘stupidity’ — could topple Trump

President Donald Trump is unique among “tyrants” — both in his cruelty and his “stupidity,” Guardian foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdall writes.

“Measured by willingness and capacity to harm the world’s poorest and most vulnerable, wreak global economic mayhem and threaten nuclear annihilation, Trump is uniquely dangerous — and ever more so by the day,” according to Tisdall.

Still, Tisdall points to a recent op-ed from University of California, Davis law professor Aaron Tang, who last week wrote an op-ed in the New York Times suggesting “the Supreme Court-tested ‘major questions doctrine’ could bring [Trump] to heel.”

“[The doctrine] requires the government to demonstrate a ‘clear congressional authorization’ when it makes decisions of great ‘economic and political significance,’” Tisdall writes of Tang’s analysis.

“Of all the tools in the tyrant-toppling toolbox, none are so potentially decisive as those supplied by Trump’s own stupidity,” Tisdall adds. “… Corruption on this scale cannot pass unchallenged indefinitely. Avarice alone may be Trump’s undoing.”

“All this points to one conclusion: as a tyrant, let alone as president, Trump is actually pretty useless – and as his failures, frustrations and fantasies multiply, he will grow ever more dangerously unstable. Trump’s biggest enemy is Trump.”

“But right now, the best, brightest hope is that, drowning in hubris, Trump will destroy himself,” the correspondent concludes.

Axios: Trump’s “pro-Hamas” purge could block foreign students from colleges

The Trump administration is discussing plans to try to block certain colleges from having any foreign students if it decides too many are “pro-Hamas,” senior Justice and State Department officials tell Axios.

  • A senior State Department official called the demonstrators it’s targeting “Hamasniks” — people the government claims have shown support for the terror group.
  • More than 300 foreign students have had their student visas revoked in the three weeks “Catch and Revoke” has been in operation, the official said. There are 1.5 million student visa-holders nationwide.
  • “Everyone is fair game,” the official said.
