Officials in Glendale, Calif., abruptly cancelled the city’s contract with Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs and Enforcement under which the local police department holds immigration detainees on their behalf.
The city said in a news release Sunday night, two days after large protests broke out in Los Angeles over ICE raids on Hispanic neighborhoods, that it had made the decision because its association with ICE had become too “divisive.”

Independent: Donald Trump Jr weighs into LA crisis by suggesting protesters should be shot by ‘Rooftop Koreans’
President’s son mocks demonstrators as tensions in California city continue
Donald Trump Jr has attempted to make light of the ongoing tensions in Los Angeles by calling for the city to “Make Rooftop Koreans Great Again!”
Donald Trump’s eldest son posted a meme on X of a Korean-American business owner inspecting a rifle on a rooftop in reference to the Los Angeles riots of 1992, which erupted in response to the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers caught on video beating Black motorist Rodney King.
The angry scenes that ensued saw some members of the local Asian diaspora take up arms to defend their businesses from looters and vandals.
Jr. is a “chip off the old block” — no class, no brains, no compassion.
Raw Story: ‘Paid Insurrectionists!’: Trump demands California Democrats ‘apologize’
Donald Trump on Sunday evening raged against California Democrats, demanding they issue an apology.
Trump weighed in the protests in Los Angeles, which are related to Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts in the state.
After a day of tense stand-offs between protesters and authorities, the president took to his own social media site, Truth Social, to send a message to California Governor Gavin Newsom and other locals.
Referring to Newsom by a derogatory nickname, Trump said, “Governor Gavin Newscum and ‘Mayor’ Bass should apologize to the people of Los Angeles for the absolutely horrible job that they have done, and this now includes the ongoing L.A. riots.”
As usual Trump shows no class whatsoever.
“These are not protesters, they are troublemakers and insurrectionists. Remember, NO MASKS!” Trump raged over the weekend.
In a follow-up post, Trump simply stated, “Paid Insurrectionists!”

AFP: China Tells Citizens In LA To Boost Personal Security Over Unrest
China’s consulate in Los Angeles told its citizens in the area on Monday to strengthen personal security, after unrest in America’s second-biggest city.
“Chinese citizens in the region (should) strengthen personal security measures, stay away from gatherings, crowded areas, or places with poor public security, and avoid going out at night or travelling alone,” the consulate said in a statement.
They should also “closely monitor official announcements” and “raise their safety awareness”, it added.
Security forces faced off with protesters in the city on Sunday, as unruly protests over federal immigration raids continued for a third day, with President Donald Trump deploying National Guard troops.
Trump, who has made clamping down on illegal migration a key plank of his second term, vowed the troops would ensure “very strong law and order”.
The deployment in California — the first over the head of a state governor since the Civil Rights era — was “purposefully inflammatory,” Governor Gavin Newsom said.
The National Guard — a reserve military — is frequently used in natural disasters, and occasionally in instances of civil unrest, but almost always with the consent of local authorities.
New York Times: The Mexican Flag Becomes a Potent L.A. Protest Symbol
Trump officials have cast demonstrators waving the Mexican flag as insurrectionists, but for many protesters who are Mexican American, the flag represents pride in their heritage.
Elizabeth Torres, 36, held a Mexican flag outside the detention center in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday morning.
“I am a very proud American,” said Ms. Torres, whose grandparents immigrated to the United States. “But I have to show support also for our Mexican brothers and sisters.”
Throughout this weekend’s protests, Mexican and other Latin American flags have emerged as protest emblems, angering the Trump administration and its supporters. Trump officials have cast flag wavers as insurrectionists and implied that they are not U.S. citizens.
Stephen Miller, a top White House adviser, called out “foreign nationals, waving foreign flags, rioting and obstructing federal law enforcement attempting to expel illegal foreign invaders” in a social media post on Sunday afternoon.
But for many protesters who are American citizens, the flag signifies pride in their roots, as well as solidarity with immigrants who are being targeted for deportation.
“They’re the children and grandchildren of immigrants,” said Chris Zepeda-Millán, a professor of Chicano studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, who has studied the immigrants rights movement in California. “They have no doubt in their own citizenship or their own belonging here, but they understand the racial undertones of the attacks on immigrants,” he said.
“So you’re getting this reaction of ‘We’re not going to let you make us be ashamed of where our parents and grandparents came from,’” Mr. Zepeda-Millán added.
Trump’s crackdown on LA protests is pure hypocrisy – and incredibly dangerous
America surely cannot withstand three and a half more years of this
Donald Trump has ordered the National Guard to enter Los Angeles in their thousands, in a move with the potential to set off the biggest domestic political crisis the US has faced since Trump’s supporters attempted an insurrection in Washington DC in 2021.
The very fact of deploying the National Guard is striking in itself, but it is the circumstances surrounding Trump’s Saturday night decision to do so that are particularly extraordinary. Foremost among those is that no-one has asked for the help of the National Guard, and there is no obvious crisis in LA for them to solve.
The United States is both a nation and a coalition of 50 states. This is something that’s easy to forget when looking at the USA from overseas, but it is fundamental: city and state governments matter, and so do the choices they make. States’ rights – the freedom of each State to make its own choices, except where the Constitution says something is a federal matter – are usually a fundamental rallying call for Republicans. And those states’ rights usually mean that the federal government doesn’t send troops into a state unless they have been requested.
And yet Trump has ordered at least 2,000 National Guardsmen into the Californian city after three days of protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. ICE had deployed tear gas and non-lethal munitions against the protests, but in a statement late on Saturday evening, Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement confirming the protests “remained peaceful” and “concluded without incident”. While some turbulence on the streets escalated in the evening, LA’s police also stressed they were in a “heightened readiness posture” and “ready to ensure the continued safety of communities”.
LA’s police, in short, are saying the protests are largely peaceful and they are able to handle them. The protests have occurred because of the actions of ICE, who are engaging in aggressive immigration raids across LA despite it being a “sanctuary city”, a term for a city in which laws have been passed barring all state officials and law enforcement from aiding immigration authorities. ICE was acting in an inflammatory way against the will of local voters, and was facing protest as a result.
In his executive memorandum ordering in the troops, Donald Trump said that those peaceful protests “constitute a form of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States” – using this as a justification for the first non-consensual deployment of federal troops in this way since the civil rights clashes in the South. As if all of this wasn’t enough, Trump’s defence secretary (and former Fox News presenter) Pete Hegseth threatened to send in Marines to LA – a move California’s governor Gavin Newsom has rightly called “deranged”.
The dangers of Trump’s unprecedented escalation here should be obvious to anyone: the federal government has no business sending armed troops where they are neither needed nor wanted. Should things escalate into violence, it would be the federal government who poured petrol onto the fire. When armed troops are on the streets and top government officials are fanning the flames, people can easily be killed – and events can spiral.
But the blazing hypocrisy of Trump and his top officials should stand out, too. One of Trump’s first actions on regaining the presidency in January was pardoning thousands of insurrectionists who participated in a violent invasion of Congress – including those who assaulted police. Now, mere months later, Trump claims to be so outraged by peaceful protest, which is protected by the First Amendment of the US constitution, that he is deploying troops against them.
This risks a full-scale collapse of the USA’s already crumbling political norms. Trump has pardoned his own supporters for violent insurrection even as he deploys armed soldiers against his political opponents. This is the behaviour of dictators, not democratic leaders. It is a sign of a society reaching its breaking point.
It has to be hoped that cooler heads prevail and manage to pull this particular crisis back from the brink. The people who actually make up the National Guard are not fanatics: they signed up to help their nation during crises, not to be a private army for a dictatorial president. California’s government and senior law enforcement officials will be trying to find ways to deploy troops that don’t risk escalating the situation. As always happens when Donald Trump is president, people will be working quietly to try to save America from the man leading it.
Hopefully America’s luck will hold and they will be successful – but as Trump embraces his tyrannical impulses ever more openly, there are fewer and fewer people around him with either the ability or the inclination to hold him back.
The citizens of Los Angeles were protesting against Trump’s unlawful use of the federal agency ICE to deport their friends and neighbours. For that, they are being called rebels against the state, and facing its military force. However the mess Trump has made in LA ends, America surely cannot withstand three and a half more years of this.
Express: Donald Trump warns ‘we are going to have troops everywhere’ after ICE protests
“We are going to have troops everywhere,” Trump said after touching down on Air Force One in New Jersey on Sunday. “We are not going to let this happen to our country.”
President Donald Trump warned there will be “troops everywhere” when asked if he will take more action if protests, like those in LA, continue to rage.
In a directive Saturday, Trump invoked a legal provision allowing him to deploy federal service members when there is ”a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.”
“We are going to have troops everywhere,” Trump said after touching down on Air Force One in New Jersey on Sunday. “We are not going to let this happen to our country.”
Earlier on Saturday, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest.”
Note that when the daffy King Donald made that post on Truth Social, the National Guard soldiers had not yet deployed.

Daily Beast: Trump Border Czar Threatens to Arrest Newsom and LA Mayor
Tom Homan also warned that if violent “rhetoric against ICE” continues, “someone’s going to lose their life.”
Border Czar Tom Homan threatened to arrest California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass if they interfere with federal immigration enforcement.
President Donald Trump has taken the extraordinary step of deploying 2,000 National Guard troops to quell protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in L.A.—despite objections from Newsom and Bass—characterizing demonstrators as out-of-control and violent.

Demonstrators have clashed with federal agents over the sweeping immigration raids ICE has conducted this weekend. Both Newsom and Bass have condemned the raids while calling for protests to remain peaceful.
“These tactics sow terror in our communities and disrupt basic principles of safety in our city,” Bass said Friday. “We will not stand for this.”

ABC 7 KABC: Trump deploys 2,000 National Guard members after Los Angeles immigration protests
ICE vowed to continue making arrests and enforce immigration laws.
The Trump administration is deploying the California National Guard in response to protests in Los Angeles over immigration enforcement operations that have resulted in some clashes between demonstrators and authorities, the White House said in a statement.
President Donald Trump signed a memorandum “deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the lawlessness” in California as demonstrations opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations continue in the state, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement Saturday.
“In the wake of this violence, California’s feckless Democrat leaders have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens,” Leavitt said. “That is why President Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester,” Leavitt said.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a post on X that the Defense Department is “mobilizing the National Guard IMMEDIATELY to support federal law enforcement in Los Angeles. And, if violence continues, active duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized – they are on high alert.”
Earlier, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the federal government was moving to “take over the California National Guard,” calling the move “purposefully inflammatory” and saying it will “only escalate tensions.”
Newsom said local California authorities don’t need the help.
“LA authorities are able to access law enforcement assistance at a moment’s notice,” he said. “We are in close coordination with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need.”
New York Times: Trump Is Calling Up National Guard Troops Under a Rarely Used Law
President Trump bypassed the authority of Gov. Gavin Newsom to call up 2,000 National Guard troops to quell immigration protests.
President Trump took extraordinary action on Saturday by calling up 2,000 National Guard troops to quell immigration protests in California, making rare use of federal powers and bypassing the authority of the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom.
It is the first time since 1965 that a president has activated a state’s National Guard force without a request from that state’s governor, according to Elizabeth Goitein, senior director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice, an independent law and policy organization. The last time was when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent troops to Alabama to protect civil rights demonstrators in 1965, she said.
Mr. Newsom, a Democrat, immediately rebuked the president’s action. “That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions,” Mr. Newsom said, adding that “this is the wrong mission and will erode public trust.”
Governors almost always control the deployment of National Guard troops in their states. But the directive signed by Mr. Trump cites “10 U.S.C. 12406,” referring to a specific provision within Title 10 of the U.S. Code on Armed Services. Part of that provision allows the federal deployment of National Guard forces if “there is a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.”
It also states that the president may call into federal service “members and units of the National Guard of any State in such numbers as he considers necessary to repel the invasion, suppress the rebellion, or execute those laws.”
…
Although some demonstrations have been unruly, local authorities in Los Angeles County did not indicate during the day that they needed federal assistance.
