ICE has reportedly arrested a suspected MS-13 gang member in Omaha, Nebraska, who is wanted for multiple murders in El Salvador. In addition, another suspected gang member was detained for ordering serious crimes such as murder and drug trafficking. ICE arrests are expected to further surge following a funding boost from $2 billion to $45 billion annually.

During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was questioned by Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) regarding the deployment of several thousand troops to Los Angeles and the alleged detention of protesters. The hearing highlighted concerns over military involvement in domestic affairs, during which Slotkin criticized Hegseth’s leadership.

Slotkin compared Hegseth’s actions to those of President Donald Trump’s former Defense Secretary Mark Esper. Esper allegedly resisted Trump’s order to deploy active-duty troops against unarmed protesters. She noted that Hegseth previously referred to the order as “theoretical.”

Slotkin said, “Here we are, a few months later, you’ve deployed 4,700 troops to Los Angeles and against the wishes of the governor.” She later asked, “How do you authorize the uniform military to detain or arrest protesters in Los Angeles?”

Hegseth defended the deployment, saying troops were ordered to support law enforcement but did not clarify if lethal force was authorized. Hegseth said, “You’re not a protester if you’re throwing concrete.”

Slotkin compared Hegseth to Esper, stating, “He had more guts and balls than you because he said, ‘I’m not going to send in the uniform military to do something that I know in my gut isn’t right.'”

One detained individual’s parents claimed their son had no legal representation and that their son had no criminal record.

Protests have intensified over ICE raids and tactics. Critics claimed the administration has shifted from targeting criminals to broad deportation.

To claim that they are deporting criminals is a farce. At this point it’s all about number — they’ll deport anyone they can get their hands on.

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stands out as a leading figure, along with Vice President Kamala Harris. As Democrats face recent electoral losses, they have struggled to unite around a common leader, raising speculation about potential presidential candidates for 2028.

University of Kentucky political science professor D. Stephen Voss said, “AOC serves as the face of the Democratic Party for many Trump supporters who dislike national Democrats. They like to pillory her as ignorant and irresponsible.”

Voss added, “At the same time, many Democrats embrace AOC as a worthy young successor to Bernie, someone who can play the role of progressive challenger in a Democratic nomination battle. Likely AOC tops the charts because she attracts so much bipartisan attention. Ocasio-Cortez enjoys good branding, as symbolized by the fact both supporters and critics simply refer to her as AOC. No matter what Ocasio-Cortez does in the next presidential election, she’ll be hard to ignore.”

The polling has found that 26 percent of respondents view Ocasio-Cortez as a leading representative, equal to those who feel there is no clear leader in the party.

During the meeting, CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins asked both leaders about the process for Abrego Garcia’s return. When Collins pressed for details, Trump shifted focus to insult her, calling her “low-rated” and saying CNN “hates our country.”
