Kansas City Star: Trump Border Czar Threatens Deportation Despite Order

Border Czar Tom Homan has noted that the administration plans to deport Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant with alleged gang affiliations. Homan labeled Garcia a “significant public safety threat” due to his connections with MS-13 and past human trafficking charges. The action has been proposed despite a court ruling that temporarily blocked Abrego Garcia’s deportation to allow for a hearing.

Homan said, “I’m giving you my word. He will be deported from this country. I got my teeth in this thing. I’m not letting it go.” He added, “Abrego Garcia’s deportation to El Salvador wasn’t a mistake.”

Homan stated, “I don’t accept the term ‘error’ in Abrego Garcia.” He added, “There was an oversight, there was a withholding order.”

Homan added, “But the facts surrounding the withholding order had changed. He is now a terrorist, and the gang he was fearing, from being removed from El Salvador, no longer exists.”

Homan expressed confidence in proceeding with the deportation despite legal challenges. Judge Xinis ruled that the process should be paused pending an evidentiary hearing.

Department of Justice (DOJ) documents linked Abrego Garcia to MS-13 and highlighted domestic abuse allegations from his estranged wife. The Trump administration has questioned the validity of Abrego Garcia’s asylum claims, arguing that he has not provided sufficient evidence of persecution.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “I will tell you what the president of El Salvador told you in the Oval Office: El Salvador does not intend to smuggle a designated foreign terrorist back into the United States.”

Leavitt added, “He is an El Salvadoran national. That is his home country. That is where he belongs.”

Kansas City Star (via MSN): Pentagon Staff Exodus Under Hegseth

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s senior adviser Justin Fulcher departed following allegations that Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Yinon Weiss reported him for security concerns to the Pentagon Force Protection Agency.

In addition to Fulcher, several high-ranking officers, such as Gen. David Allvin, departed amid controversies like “Signalgate.” Critics, including former defense secretaries, have described Hegseth’s leadership as “reckless.” His actions have been framed as “cleaning house.” The broader pattern of departures underscores ongoing scrutiny of Hegseth’s tenure.

Fulcher is the sixth top aide who has exited under Hegseth, as the secretary has faced ongoing scrutiny for his management style.

Questions regarding Fulcher’s credentials reportedly emerged after his previous telehealth startup went bankrupt.

Kansas City Star: Supreme Court Asked to Review Marriage Ruling

Former Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to review a civil judgment issued against her for refusing to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Her actions, which took place shortly after the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision in 2015, have continued to spark legal debate. While plaintiffs and LGBTQ advocates have criticized the move as an attempt to undermine established rights, conservative activists have rallied behind Davis.

Davis argued that the First Amendment’s free exercise clause shielded her from personal liability while in office. She urged the Court to overturn Obergefell.

Attorney Mathew Staver wrote, “The mistake must be corrected.” Staver argued that Davis is “the first individual in the Republic’s history who was jailed for following her religious convictions regarding the historic definition of marriage, this should be it.”

Lower courts rejected her defenses and affirmed liability for state action in her role. A federal appeals panel concluded that she may not invoke the First Amendment against such claims.

Attorneys for David Ermold and David Moore have urged the Court to deny review. They noted that no appellate judge supported rehearing.

Attorney William Powell said, “Not a single judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals showed any interest in Davis’s rehearing petition, and we are confident the Supreme Court will likewise agree that Davis’s arguments do not merit further attention.”

The petition has arrived amid efforts in several states to limit recognition of same-sex marriages. Public support has remained high, but partisan divides have notably widened.

If the Supreme Court hears the case, it could revisit same-sex marriage precedents, though existing marriages remain protected under the 2022 Respect for Marriage Act.

Kansas City Star: Trump Suffers Double Legal Blow

District Judge Jennifer Thurston has ordered the release of Syrian asylum seeker Salam Maklad and barred her rearrest without constitutional safeguards. Advocates have raised concerns that contested grant rules are disrupting essential services, while officials have noted that the cases have tested federal authority.

In addition to Thurston’s decision, U.S. District Judge William Smith has blocked new Justice Department grant conditions related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and transgender rights. Both rulings represent legal blows to the Trump administration, as they directly challenge and overturn key policy actions.

Both rulings, issued this month, limit the administration’s ability to enforce its immigration and social policy priorities. Critics say this highlights judicial checks on executive authority despite Republican control in Congress and the White House.

Thurston wrote, “Respondents are PERMANENTLY ENJOINED AND RESTRAINED from re-arresting or re-detaining Ms. Maklad absent compliance with constitutional protections, which include at a minimum, pre-deprivation notice—describing the change of circumstances necessitating her arrest—and detention, and a timely bond hearing.”

Thurston added, “At any such hearing, the Government SHALL bear the burden of establishing, by clear and convincing evidence, that Ms. Maklad poses a danger to the community or a risk of flight, and Ms. Maklad SHALL be allowed to have her counsel present.”

Thurston ordered Maklad’s release after an ICE check-in triggered her detention, noting she has no criminal history and is not a flight risk. She barred ICE from rearresting Maklad without notice of changed circumstances and a timely bond hearing.

Smith granted preliminary relief to 17 nonprofits challenging updated Office on Violence Against Women grant terms. He found the conditions likely arbitrary under federal law.

Smith wrote, “On the one hand, if the Court does not grant preliminary relief, then the Coalitions will face real and immediate irreparable harm from the challenged conditions, conditions which the Court has already concluded likely violate the APA.”

Smith added, “This could result in the disruption of important and, in some cases, life saving services to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. On the other hand, if the Court grants preliminary relief, then the Office will simply have to consider grant applications and award funding as it normally does.”

Democracy Forward President Skye Perryman said, “The Justice Department should be exploring what they can be doing to keep people and communities safe, not threatening funding for local and community organizations with proven results.”

Kansas City Star: Court Upholds Restraining Order in Blow to ICE

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has criticized President Trump’s aggressive ICE raids, arguing they harm the city’s economy by spreading fear among immigrants. She notes significant business losses in Latino neighborhoods like Boyle Heights. Bass condemned the use of National Guard and Marines to quell protests, calling it excessive.

Earlier this month, a federal court upheld a restraining order against indiscriminate ICE arrests in Southern California. Bass joined a lawsuit to stop the raids, highlighting their impact on families, while adopting a bolder leadership approach amid recovery from January 2025 wildfires and her 2026 reelection campaign.

Bass said, “Let me just say that, because we are a city of immigrants, we have entire sectors of our economy that are dependent on immigrant labor. We have to get the fire areas rebuilt. We’re not going to get our city rebuilt without immigrant labor.”

Bass added, “And it’s not just the deportations, it’s the fear that sets in when raids occur, when people are snatched off the street. And I know you are aware that even people who are here legally, even people who are U.S. citizens, have been detained.”

Bass stated that “what I think we need is comprehensive immigration reform. I served in Congress for 12 years.” She stressed the importance of immigrant labor in post-crisis recovery and noted that ICE raid fears impact both undocumented residents and U.S. citizens.

Kansas City Star: ‘Not on Our Watch’: ICE Announces Major Arrests

ICE has reportedly arrested a suspected MS-13 gang member in Omaha, Nebraska, who is wanted for multiple murders in El Salvador. In addition, another suspected gang member was detained for ordering serious crimes such as murder and drug trafficking. ICE arrests are expected to further surge following a funding boost from $2 billion to $45 billion annually.

Wow! Pugsley Homan caught whole two real criminals. I’m impressed. Not!

[Todd] Lyons stated, “Our ICE officers and agents are protecting your neighborhoods, even when you don’t know the threat is there, so either support them, or get out of the way.”

Like hell you are. Your masked Gestapo thugs are terrorizing our neighborhoods, not protecting them.

Kansas City Star: ‘More Guts Than You’: Hegseth Faces Growing Scrutiny

During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was questioned by Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) regarding the deployment of several thousand troops to Los Angeles and the alleged detention of protesters. The hearing highlighted concerns over military involvement in domestic affairs, during which Slotkin criticized Hegseth’s leadership.

Slotkin compared Hegseth’s actions to those of President Donald Trump’s former Defense Secretary Mark Esper. Esper allegedly resisted Trump’s order to deploy active-duty troops against unarmed protesters. She noted that Hegseth previously referred to the order as “theoretical.”

Slotkin said, “Here we are, a few months later, you’ve deployed 4,700 troops to Los Angeles and against the wishes of the governor.” She later asked, “How do you authorize the uniform military to detain or arrest protesters in Los Angeles?”

Hegseth defended the deployment, saying troops were ordered to support law enforcement but did not clarify if lethal force was authorized. Hegseth said, “You’re not a protester if you’re throwing concrete.”

Slotkin compared Hegseth to Esper, stating, “He had more guts and balls than you because he said, ‘I’m not going to send in the uniform military to do something that I know in my gut isn’t right.'”

Kansas City Star: Border Czar: Migrants Detained Without Criminal Records

Federal agents in Los Angeles have reportedly apprehended over 2,300 individuals in early June at their workplaces, resulting in rapid deportations. The operation has sparked significant unrest and protests, as critics have expressed outrage regarding immigrant rights. One detained individual’s parents claimed their son had no legal representation and that their son had no criminal record.

Advocates have argued the raids contradict federal claims of targeting offenders. They claimed that over 200 detainees have no documented offenses.

Protests have intensified over ICE raids and tactics. Critics claimed the administration has shifted from targeting criminals to broad deportation.

To claim that they are deporting criminals is a farce. At this point it’s all about number — they’ll deport anyone they can get their hands on.

Kansas City Star: ‘Party is Completely Broken’: Poll Reveals AOC Approval

Co/efficient polling has shown a lack of agreement among likely voters concerning the Democratic Party’s future leadership. Co/efficient polling is a U.S.-based analytics firm specializing in political and public affairs research.

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stands out as a leading figure, along with Vice President Kamala Harris. As Democrats face recent electoral losses, they have struggled to unite around a common leader, raising speculation about potential presidential candidates for 2028.

University of Kentucky political science professor D. Stephen Voss said, “AOC serves as the face of the Democratic Party for many Trump supporters who dislike national Democrats. They like to pillory her as ignorant and irresponsible.”

Voss added, “At the same time, many Democrats embrace AOC as a worthy young successor to Bernie, someone who can play the role of progressive challenger in a Democratic nomination battle. Likely AOC tops the charts because she attracts so much bipartisan attention. Ocasio-Cortez enjoys good branding, as symbolized by the fact both supporters and critics simply refer to her as AOC. No matter what Ocasio-Cortez does in the next presidential election, she’ll be hard to ignore.”

The polling has found that 26 percent of respondents view Ocasio-Cortez as a leading representative, equal to those who feel there is no clear leader in the party.
