CNBC: NYC mayoral candidate Brad Lander arrested by ICE

New York City Comptroller and Democratic mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested Tuesday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents while he was escorting a defendant out of immigration court.

“While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE,” Lander’s wife, Meg Barnette, wrote on X.

Lander repeatedly asked the officers to show him a judicial warrant before he is handcuffed, per the video posted by Barnette.

Associated Press: Coming to America? In 2025, the US to some looks less like a dream and more like a place to avoid

For centuries, people in other countries saw the United States as place of welcome and opportunity. Now, President Donald Trump’s drive for mass deportations of migrants is riling the streets of Los Angeles, college campuses, even churches — and fueling a global rethinking about the virtues and promise of coming to America.

“The message coming from Washington is that you are not welcome in the United States,” ….

Guardian: Australian deported from US says he was ‘targeted’ due to writing on pro-Palestine student protests

Alistair Kitchen says he was detained and questioned about views on Israel and Palestine before being deported from LA to Melbourne

An Australian man who was detained upon arrival at Los Angeles airport and deported back to Melbourne says United States border officials told him it was due to his writing on pro-Palestine protests by university students.

The 33-year-old said he was “clearly targeted for politically motivated reasons” and said officials spent more than 30 minutes questioning him about his views on Israel and Palestine including his “thoughts on Hamas”.

Kitchen said officials asked him for his “thoughts about the conflict in a very broad sense”, including about student protesters, what Israel “should have done differently” and “how I would resolve the conflict”.

“It was quite an in-depth probing of my views on the war,” he said.

Kitchen said he was deported and landed back in Melbourne on Saturday morning.

Politico: Trump knocks California on its heels: ‘He’s pulling the trigger on everything all at once.’

In years of conflict with Trump, California has never seen anything like this.

California Democrats have long battled Donald Trump. But they’ve never faced such a ferocious offensive as they did this week.

Between the deployment of federal agents to Los Angeles, the gutting of climate standards and the manhandling of the state’s senior U.S. senator, the state absorbed one show of force after another from the president. And in the balance of power between the Trump administration and the nation’s most populous state, California was on the losing end.

“We’re at DEFCON 1 in the conflict between California and the Trump administration,” said Democratic strategist Katie Merrill. “It’s orders of magnitude more than what we’ve seen, ever.”

Democrats in this deep-blue state have spent years working to shield California from a hostile White House, dating back to his first term. But for them, the week’s events registered a new low — a multifront assault that not only threatened the state’s liberal values, but exposed the limits of California’s ability to control its destiny when the federal government has other ideas.

“The moment we’ve feared,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a Tuesday night address, “has arrived.”

AFP: Balloons, bubbles, tear gas: LA anti-Trump protests turn chaotic

For hours, thousands of people in Los Angeles peacefully celebrated their defiance of US President Donald Trump Saturday with music, marching, bubbles and balloons — then police unexpectedly moved in, and chaos and confusion broke out.

The demonstration — part of the nationwide “No Kings” day of protests across the country — was by far the largest in more than a week of protests ignited by anger against immigration raids the Trump administration has been carrying out across the country’s second-largest city.

Like those before it, Saturday’s had been largely peaceful. A march that began in the morning had finished, with demonstrators milling about on a sunny afternoon as the scene took on the air of a street festival.

But then:

Then police unexpectedly began moving people away from the area, igniting confusion and anger among demonstrators caught off guard and unsure of where to go.

Police on horseback pushed crowds back as law enforcement fired tear gas and flash-bang grenades hours ahead of an 8:00 pm (0300 GMT) curfew.

A police spokeswoman later told local TV channel KTLA that a “small group of agitators” had begun throwing rocks, bottles and fireworks at officers, prompting the decision to order the crowd to disperse.

Wall Street Journal: Trump’s Deportation Raids in L.A. Hit Longtime Workforce

He is one of the millions of immigrants who make up greater Los Angeles’s Hispanic community, one of the nation’s largest and oldest. Some crossed the border illegally, overstayed visas or were brought here illegally as children and are stuck in legal limbo. They assumed President Trump wouldn’t target them for deportation and that he would instead focus on criminals and more recent arrivals.

The raids that unfolded here this past week, triggering protests and Trump’s deployment of National Guard and active duty troops, shattered that belief and altered life for a community that underpins the economy of the nation’s second-largest metropolis.

Experts estimate the number of immigrants who entered illegally or are living illegally in Los Angeles County at close to one million people, or roughly 10% of the population.

So if King Donald and his Nazi Stephen Miller have their way, one out of every ten L.A. residents will be disappeared.

MeidasTouch News: DHS to Revoke Work and Residency Permits for Hundreds of Thousands of Migrants

Nationals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela face deportation as Trump administration dismantles Biden-era parole program

In a sweeping immigration enforcement move, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is expected to notify hundreds of thousands of migrants on Thursday that their permission to live and work in the United States has been revoked, according to a notice obtained by CNN.

The targeted individuals — nationals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela — originally entered the country through a Biden-era humanitarian parole program that provided legal entry and temporary protection to those with U.S.-based sponsors and who passed security vetting.

More than half a million people are believed to have benefited from the program. It remains unclear how many of those individuals have since transitioned into other legal immigration pathways, such as asylum or family-based visas.

This administration thrives on the misery of those less fortunate.

Mediaite: Pritzker Throws ‘Hitler’ Comment Back at GOP Congresswoman: ‘I Am Not Going To Be Lectured to by Somebody Who Extols the Virtue of Adolf Hitler’

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D-IL) did not appreciate the line of questioning he received from Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) during a committee meeting on Thursday.

The House Oversight Committee conducted a wild hearing with “sanctuary state governors,” featuring Govs. Pritzker, Kathy Hochul (D-NY), and Tim Walz (MN). Republicans on the committee took turns hectoring the witnesses.

When it was her turn, Miller took issue with Pritzker’s criticism of raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Chicago.

Pritzker responded by referencing a bizarre comment Miller made in 2021, when she said, “Hitler was right on one thing: He said, ‘Whoever has the youth, has the future.’” The congresswoman eventually apologized for the reference.

“You know, Congresswoman Miller, I am not going to be lectured to by somebody who extols the virtue of Adolf Hitler,”

“Reclaiming my time!” Miller interjected. The hearing moved on.

Independent: Police deploy tear gas as ‘No Kings’ protesters rally against Trump

Tensions escalated during “No Kings” protests against Donald Trump on the streets of downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, 14 June, as police sought to disperse demonstrators with abrupt orders to leave.

Protesters were pushed back by officers on horseback, and law enforcement also fired flash bangs and canisters of tear gas to clear out demonstrators after the formal event ended.

Millions of people were estimated to have joined the protests in more than 2,000 communities, which took place the same day as a military parade in Washington, D.C., for the Army’s 250th anniversary, which coincided with the president’s birthday.

Demonstrations protested what organisers described as Mr Trump’s authoritarian agenda, including recent immigration raids that have rattled communities across the country, including in LA.
